Afghan elders with eyeliner and red beards?

Throughout the movie I noticed quite a few of the "elders" had their beards dyed reddish. Why exactly do they do this?(edit: I THOUGHT i had looked over all the threads for this movie, apparently not, because someone asked about the beards as well. apparently it means they have been to Mecca)

And it also looks like some of them were wearing black eyeliner? Maybe im just crazy on the last part, but it definitely looks like they are wearing eyeliner.

You're right, I thought and noticed the same thing. The red beard is from an organic paste called Mehendi (you may notice women in india put that in their hands during weddings) anyways, that gives it the red color. Women (and men) use that in hair too - applied on black hair it gives a nice tinge of red under the sun.

As for the eyelines those old men had on - its kajal. Its some form of natural eye liner. Legend has it, if you apply it it improves your vision. You will notice a lot of kids and babies from that region (india/afgan/pakistan) will have that black eye liner/kajal under their eyes.

...hope that help! :)
