Apache.... Lack of Longbow radar mounted on rotor.

Anyone know why this is ?

I always prefered the way they look without.

Apaches weren't originally fitted with the Longbow radar, and the AH-64D will work in concert with other AH-64s.

I've read books (see below) by British Apache pilots who flew in the Afghan theatre. As stated in those books British Apaches from AgustaWestland were re-engined and have slightly more power than the original US Apaches from Boeing. This allowed them to operate with full ammunition loads and Longbow radar in place in the high-altitude environment in Afghanistan. The Longbow radars were removed from US AH-64Ds to reduce weight and compensate for lack of power.

The books I mention are Apache and Hellfire by Ed Macy and Dressed to Kill by Charlotte Madison.

I've also found the following articles that refer to this.
