Is it anti witches

What I want to know before even taking time to watch it is if its against witches in general or like the christians that are fundies. I practice wicca and witchcraft and have nothing to do with evil. Its like the christians here talking about how they portray the right wing nutter christians in these movies. I have some dear friends who are christian and they are nothing like the movie versions portraying them. I suppose just have to watch a movie just for its entertainment value and not over analyze it for reality aspect.

reply

Don't over analyze lol. Its a pretty good movie. I don't think its anit-witches at all. Just finished watching... it got me interested to read the books:)

reply

I cant over analyze something I havent seen yet. I just thought if someone had seen it and it was about negativity to witches again I didnt want to waste time viewing it. thanks

Witches do not necessarily equal wiccans. You're trendy religion isn't bashed in every movie that witches are the enemy in.

Did you also think Into the Woods or Bewitched was anti wiccan?

i do not usually comment on these things but your response to her simple question on how witches are portrayed and i quote "You're trendy religion" shows an ignorance that you may not realize, the Wicca belief is very old not trendy it had to go underground for fear of death or torture this is one of the reasons that the rhyme is used so that things could be easily remembered and passed from mother to daughter and not written down to be found later by small minds..i have seen this move and to answer the original question, no the portrayal of a witch is not anti but it is evil or good, no gray so in that way it is far from reality as a movie should be. i enjoyed it.

The main religious nutter is inhabited by a witch who is instigating almost all of the mudslinging.

I certainly didn't see it as anti-witch at all, neither did I see it as anti-Christian. There are right-wing nutcase Christians portrayed in the film, but decent Christians as well - witness the pastor who gives the sacrifice sermon - so I don't understand why some of the Christians posting on this board have got all uppity about this film. Similarly, both good and bad witches are portrayed, so my take is that it is a balanced story. The principal female character with supernatural powers has some challenging choices to make, and that is partly what makes the story so interesting.

reply

The film is too terrible to be anti-anything.

I agree with fredericoribeiro.

*groan*

You know, I get it with the established religions - they brainwash their kids into it and the poor little buggers mostly don't have the mental resources to break free of such a thorough indoctrination even as adults. But what's your excuse? Wiccans and people who actually convert to Scientology and Mormonism as adults? Are you just plain stupid? Why would you adopt a belief for which there is no evidence? In the case of wiccans, I have to say I suspect you lot just like that it's mysterious and romantic and you want to feel all special and what not. Whatever floats your boat, I guess - at least you guys aren't trying to interfere with legislation - but it's pretty silly.

reply

Im not sure why you needed to reply to my comment in such a derogatory manner. But I will assume you have no idea what I believe in or practice. My excuse is that I love life and nature. I study like anyone else does in science and history,. wicca is a nature based faith system very peaceful even the wiccan rede is "and it harm none' I belive in unity and peace and that everything contains energy and consciousness. even if that consciousness is at different levels. I can not teach you my faith nor do I want to but until you actually do some research on it maybe not be critical of someone before you do comment. I do take offence to the "you lot" since I am a solitary practitioner and do not belong to any organized wiccan coven. I have you know I am special and so are you.. I do not do it out of romance but out of my awe of the universe.. Life is magickal maybe if your life is boring give it a try ? walk in anothers persons shoes a while then maybe you can comment more intelligently about it then on if you like it or not. Lets hope your boat floats as well in what you practice .. whatever that is ..

reply

Well see, I'm in awe of the universe, I love nature. So I read about physics and I garden and I recycle. Hell, I'll even dry my own herbal tea on occasion, and some might call me a tree hugger. But I don't then interpret that as magical and call myself a witch. How does awe of the universe and love of nature lead to believing stuff like that everything has a concsciousness, when there is no evidence to back that up?

I'm not critical of wicca specifically - as I see you're used to defending it on a moral level against typically christian criticisms - I'm critical of all faith based belief systems. THAT is my point. Faith is not a good reason to believe something, and while I understand how Christianity and Islam perpetuate themselves through indoctrinating children, I have a hard time understanding why adults who've managed to escape that indoctrination would then knowingly subscribe to a brand new belief system of woowoo nonsense, when there is actual knowledge available in the hard sciences.

As for why derogatory, it's because I've no patience left for this nonsense. I DON'T respect irrational beliefs, and I make no apologies for that.

reply

You have made it clear that you have no evidence. Your lack of evidence is your problem, not hers. Witchcraft irritates me as well, but your game is far worse.

reply

For what precisely do I need to provide evidence?

reply

Wow, ass-tard much, xanxei? So you're critical of all faith based belief systems... so what? I doubt seriously that spiritdovie53 posted here so she could get your critical review of her beliefs... how is "THAT is my point." her problem or concern? You don't have to make apologies for what you respect or don't respect, but you should certainly apologize to spiritdovie53 for acting like a complete jerk-off.

~ the hardest thing in this world... is to live in it ~

reply

Sure, I'll admit to being a jerk in this instance. Occasionally I'm a jerk. Whatever. But if you'd care to notice, I'm actually asking a question. HOW does this happen? How does a person, an adult, who was not indoctrinated since childhood, choose to adopt a whole new belief system for which there is no evidence? And believe in it to such a degree that they'll label themselves accordingly and treat it as a religious affiliation. I can't think of why a person would do that, so I'm asking one who apparently has.

reply

After the way you asked, I am not surprised that she did not really answer. Jerk-off.

Once again, Douglas Adams has said it all far more eloquently than most of us possibly could:

Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?

I am a Right Winger Conservative Republican, but only because I believe in the constitution. The Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press and Freedom of Religion, then I Support the 2nd Amendment, to carry firearms by law abiding citizens. I also believe in "not quartering of soldiers in my home during peacetime" 4th Amendment- Right of search and Seizure without a proper warrant stating specific evidence of a specific crime, the 5th Amendment to invoke Self incrimination. You get the idea? Not every conservative is a "nutter" as you so boldly put it. I believe in conserving family and values. Whether children have 2 Moms or 2 Dads, even through marriage- that's a family. There are too many children in foster homes waiting for a family. People don't agree with me I know this to be true. You have probably seen for yourself that a true Christian does not see color, race or gender as a boundary for a family. It takes a village to raise a child. This movie is not anti-witch. It actually shows how stupid some people in specific areas of this nation that I so much love can be so filled with hate and stupidity. SPOILER- Two girls invoke the protection of Jesus because the main character is just sitting in her seat and spoke out loud.--- I don't quite remember the scene, but the type of Holy roller'ing going on does exist in this world. If people like that spent half that amount of energy praying for other people's health as much as they pray for their own safety, the whole world would be a lot better off. Yes, it seems the bigger the church the "Holier than Thou" the congregation becomes and people lose focus of why they built Gods House in the first place. There is so much faith and prayers for the sinners people think their neighbors have on their souls. People should stop throwing stones at them. They should just pray for them after they have left their presence. I have come across people that do not want to be helped or prayed for. So, I have silently walked away and prayed for them later. We shouldn't pray for them to their face if they do not want it. We should respect people's wishes. People are uncomfortable. Some people may experience guilt when a preacher's wife who offered to pray for them, they send away, may give them guilty pangs. Talking to God or any god of their choice is their choice. Not mine or anyone else's to choose for them. People say Jesus said to spread the word of God. He also said be tolerant and treat my neighbor and my brother as I want to be treated. I don't want someone else's religion shoved in my face. Why would I do that to someone else??? I'll just plant that option to think about my faith for them. I'll let them think it over. That's my motto. They'll know what to do when their time comes. Some people never know their true selves until their last breath. It's not my place to render judgment. So, I support gays and lesbians. Especially in their pursuit of building families. Just as heterosexual males and females, I do not condone this sleeping around thing though. But, if people want to do it. then they'll do it. But, that is how disease is spread and disease costs money. Someone has to pay for the insurance on that shot of Penicillin in the butt!! Then there are things that AJAX won't take off neither will any anti-virals or anti-biotics. Some things only treat the symptoms, not cure the disease. Besides, knowing about "Old Time" religions, you can learn a lot about herbs and spices. The original Apothecaries you know. Then they branched off and became pharmacists, nurses and doctors. I know long... too much info. There's a lot we can learn from each other. So, I recommend this movie as a love story that makes bounderies, but if you want love you have to have courage to go beyond them. even if you think you are saving someone from hurting themselves in the long run by letting them go under false pretenses, you should let someone go because it was their choice to leave, not because you think it's the right thing to do. things have a way of working out if they are meant to. If they don't, it's because we missed a step or a clue. We just get up, dust ourselves off and start over. It's called life.

Merry we meet, merry we part and merry we meet again and again and again.

Whooo... That was quite a rant. Other than preaching people to death, is there a point to it?
