A Review of "Secrets in the Walls"

“They are not alone.” Produced by the Lifetime Movie Network, it is exactly what you would expect. A strong-willed, blonde-haired divorcee (Jeri Ryan) who “don’t need no man” lives with her two perfect and snotty children in an apartment on the sunny side of Detroit. Upon finishing up her first day on the job after not working for eight years, she takes a walk through a neighborhood, stumbles upon a Realtor outside an old house that’s for sale, and even though it appears money is tight, buys the home within a couple of weeks, and off they go on the next part of life’s journey. The house ends up being haunted by a dead teenage girl, and we hit every horror cliché in the book as we weave our way through the story, including the ghost scaring you in a mirror behind one of the main characters, lights flickering, music boxes playing on their own, and of course, the main character’s psychic friend who comes to save the day. Secrets in the Walls is pretty well-acted, despite the dismal story and cheap scares. Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Ian Kahn do well in supporting roles, while Kay Panabaker and Peyton List are the two daughters. The pace runs as slow as molasses through a sieve and the ending is so predictable that you know where its going ten minutes into the movie. It’s not awful, but there aren’t many redeeming qualities either, except for the “secret in the walls”, which you find out towards the end. I suppose there was some potential here, but the adherence a PG-rating and so many unrealistic “real life” moments certainly sink the finished project. Good for a family viewing, but if you’re looking for a midnight popcorn-churner, make sure you avoid. Directed by Christopher Leitch. Final Verdict: Doesn’t Suck.
