Holy *beep*

...on the other hand, is it remotely possible that the guy was actually somewhat known (but not to us), did it for more than $300, and this is all a big publicity thing?

Sorry, the cynic speaks. But man, if not...holy SHEEAT.

First off, the guy operates a successful post production house in Uruguay. You can see the other stuff he did on his youtube page - music videos, tv promos for uruguaian television, etc. The 300 bucks budget does not take into account the thousands of dollars of software and computer and camera equipment that we can assume he already had on hand. As for the rest, I'd imagine the money went mostly to permits. It's entirely possible the crowds were volunteers - I've seen local craigslist ads for people to volunteer as extras in music videos and whatnot, people are all to happy to turn out for something cool like that. Then he might have used crowd replication software too, filmed friends and family one at a time in front of greenscreen and composited them into a larger shot, etc.

Maybe that's the point, as far as the studio is concerned...like, sure, if you can get a whole bunch of stuff and services for free, get donated acting time, etc., we'll sign you right up. Gotta get a pretty good net return out of that somewhere. ;-)

$300, $30Mil, it wouldn't matter at this point. This one is a kick-a$$ film. The theme 28 Days Later reminded me how a low budget film can be vastly successful.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. He would need massive pull with the authorities to achieve the huge crowds running sequences, etc. And plus, he had the access to the software which costs thousands of dollars. Perhaps the $300.00 is just for tape stock and gas.

I won't highly rate this film either just for the effects, there was a severe lack of story. If this was just created to show off CGI creating skills then it shouldn't be called a film, more like a show reel.

A city is under attack by giant robots/aliens. That's pretty much like War of the Worlds or Cloverfield, and its interesting enough to watch as a short film.

This was a fantastic piece of work, but there is no way this was a $300 project. I have done much worse 5 minute films that cost more. I'd love to have this guy's accountant!!!

Fantastic film. I can't believe it's taken Hollywood four years to give this guy a job.

School's for people who are boring and ugly and serious. And you, button, are none of those.

Well, to be fair, there were all those "National Lampoon's Blah Blah Blah" and "Hottie and the Nottie" and "Adventures of Pluto Nash" and "Daddy Day Camp" kinda films that needed financing, so, you know.
