Alan is really bad at his job

SPOILERS:
This is an amazing premise, and I was looking forward to his techniques and strategies to "heal" Sam.
Instead he did close to nothing. I'm not a therapist but even I was like: "So why do want to stop killing people? Why were you killing in the first place? Your father is still alive? Wow, I think you should confront him and get closure, instead of just killing random assholes who were rude to you."
I get that the therapist was in shock, but after a few days it should wear off and the survival instinct would kick in. He was just bad at his job.
