Needs more than one watch

The film is slowly paced and Guzman, and others participating, are allowed time to speak at their own pace with plenty of pauses within which the participants can reflect and, for some, cry. The narration rolls slowly and comfortingly from Guzman and yet the film's speech is often elliptical that it will require more than one watch. First viewing introduces the audience to the wonder of the Atacama and the universe that can be viewed from its skies and the beauty and ephemeral light that moves in the sky and around us. Amidst such light there is the darkness of what the Atacama conceals within its deep history and that evokes strong feelings, which meant my concentration on philosophy and images floated away.

I really hope one day to visit Chile and the Atacama desert.

I agree. Great post.

I've just finished watching this from a recording off the telly. Normally when I've watched something, I delete it straight away, but this one is staying on the hard drive to watch again later. Possibly quite some time later.

Stunning piece of work, on so many levels. The knowledge I picked up about the history of astronomy, astronomy itself, the desert, the people of Chile were enough, but the stories, the loss, the pain of those still looking knocked it all into a new frame. It was too much to take in. Wonderful and terrible all together.

Thanks. I've had the dvd for a year now and haven't been able to watch it again just yet.

Yes they did. Of course when opposites are yoked together as were the beauty and ugliness of the desert in the film, it heightens each all the more.

I can't comprehend what it's like to spend your time searching for bits of human bone to try and find your loved one's remains and then bury them literally and emotionally. It's so painful to even think about.

I have just seen this for the first time on tv. I was so attracted by the enigmatic title so I just had to give this one a try. Within a few minutes of the start of the film I set the record so that I could keep it on dvd. I just knew this a film I shall want to return to again and again. It fascinates me. It's slowness is part of it's beauty.

The title's great! Glad you appreciated the film. It's definitely a keeper for rewatching.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.
