Why 'The Cube' Is Doomed, Says Popular Game Show Website

BuzzerBlog, the popular US-based website that provides news about TV game shows from the US, the UK, and internationally, has published an article detailing the performance so far in the current series (Series Four, Fall 2011) of 'The Cube', both in terms of how well the contestants have done, as well as the show's overall ratings so far this series. And considering that they published a similar artice just two and a half weeks ago, it's a pretty gloomy picture.

Without a doubt, BuzzerBlog states, the games have been made harder, meaning the contestants are using their 'Simplify' and 'Trial Run' helps earlier and earlier in the game, and losing and leaving with nothing just as early, and more frequently than ever. And that's hurting the BAFTA Award-winning show's ratings.

Back in the first series, only one contestant lost and left with nothing. So far this series, five out of ten contestants have now left empty-handed, including TWO on the December 4th episode (a clip is available on the page linked below). As for the other five, only one has won £50,000, with the others walking away with much less (£11,000 is the current average for Series Four, compared to around £25,000 across the first three series).

And the ratings are taking a beating as a result. For a show that usually averaged in the high-4 to low-5 million viewer mark across the first three series, Sunday's episode and its back-to-back losses has reportedly become the first to drop below the 4 million viewer mark. That's not bad, about the same as celebrity episodes of 'The Chase', but for the show that is currently the lead-in to the UK version of 'The X Factor', it might not be too long before Simon Cowell notices and starts to raise a stink about it (among other things).

So how does ITV fix 'The Cube'? They'll need to answer soon. There are only two episodes left in the current series, and the clock is now ticking in more ways than one.
