Would like to see an American version, could it ever get made in U.S.A.

I would love to see a picture with this kind of cynical view about life and politics here in the U.S.A. . Unfortunately they always end up blaming everything on the CIA or some left or Right wing conspiracy. The only thing I can think as slightly close to this picture is of course "The Wire".

I feel down on my beloved country because I grew up believing in "one person, one vote". With "Citizens United" I can only teach kids yes you can vote for that candidate until some (billionaire, foreign country, terrorist group,Corporation,Religious organization,Atheist organization,ACLU,NRA,Football team, soccer team owner, dog fighting ring owners association) secret Super Pac gives 100 million to the opposition candidate three months before the election. Just think if you were running for State rep, or state judge and that happened to you.

I also think the story of how this country's poor are treated needs to be told. Not right wing or left just told.

Never happen in Hollywood. To many interest to keep happy at the major studios.

God bless you all if you read this far. I will stop ranting. It really nagged at me while watching this movie."why not here" I kept saying. Were the U.S. the greatest country, no problems move on nothing to see.

The whole idea behind "Enemy Within" was that the system was the problem, not individuals, agencies, militias, or politicians. At the end, the film even places some of the blame on the viewer. When Nacimiento says "Who do you think pays for all of this?" he does not mean drug dealers, he means regular people who willingly pay taxes hoping that they will benefit them, when in reality they are actually supporting a system that ends up kicking them when they're down.

The irony of "one person, one vote" is exactly the problem with this particular system, because politicians then care about that "one vote". The "system" is a living, breathing thing that will always conform itself to the given structure. In other words, a benevolent dictator will always be the only way to truly protect and support the public, while having such a dictator is the only true impossibility in the world of politics. Anything else will either already be corrupted, or the few corrupt individuals will over time gradually corrupt the rest. In the first and second movies, Nacimiento made it somewhat clear that there were different levels of corruption, and its not like the Militias simply attracted corrupt individuals. Instead, these institutions were able to destroy any and all ideals over time.

However, the only thing like this that has ever been created with respect to the American system is and most likely will be "The Wire. Unfortunately, given the high praise but low popularity of the show, there is little hope that the public will open its eyes, and it only gets more difficult with every subsequent day.

Jesus, stop saying "Nacimiento". It is Nascimento.

There's no "iento" in portuguese.

Well said! Also, I don't think an American version can be made, because of the different values and background and beliefs. It's less about accepting and more about understanding.

In our country, it's near impossible to win elections without corporate support.
Too many people just say we are exceptional and we have no problems, look at the problems of these other countries, they are this and that. Well, the U.S and European corporations are the pones causing most problems in other countries because of the exploitation of their resources, they bribe the leaders and keep them in power, the leaders keep the military members and police happy, so the people have a hard time fighting that.

Spread the truth with knowledge.

It is absolutely true that in the U.S. and the EU elections are won through corporate support. Unfortunately, the only other ways to win that currently exist are:

a) using the military, or other organized means of overthrowing the current leader (many nations in Africa)
b) fixing elections behind the scenes (Modern Russia, possibly China and other places with strong role of security agencies)

and the democratic election process appears to simply be "the lesser of two evils".

The world is getting smaller and smaller and the battle for national resources like oil, gas, and metal deposits, is only increasing. Scientists, sociologists, and economists believe that in less than 100 years, countries will be going to war over access to drinking water, and given the current situation I believe their predictions are not that far off.

In all honesty, I do not know how things can be improved, locally or worldwide. You basically would need to get every one in the world on the same page, otherwise the minority - however small it may be initially - will over time corrupt the rest.

At this point, to hold anyone and everyone accountable for their actions, you basically would need a world with no privacy...and that in my opinion would be even worse than even the current situation.

That's a defeatist attitude, saying "well that place is run by the military so we have it better", no, it's about improving a corrupt system, no matter how low on the evil scale it is.

You got the resources part right, right now out military protects corporate investments in other countries so that we can get the latest technology, iphones, video game systems, and these other little petty things. It's one thing to say "no blood for oil", but what happens when it "no blood for water", who would protest?
The people that have all the money, power and technology have seen the war for water, among other resources have seen it coming.
The ideas of renewable energy and people working together were purposely derailed and bought out in favor of a monetary economic structure.

The problem is that "ordinary" people believe what these guys with power and money tell them, which is that "one day you can be rich too"

You just need to have these people behind these atrocities, the faceless giants of multinational corporations held accountable for their corruption along with the congress members who support sending our troops all over the world to control resources for them.
Want to learn more, read or watch John Perkins and "Confessions of an economic hit-man".

The subtitle here, :The Enemy Within is the key.

This movie shows the very complicated interaction between elected officials, college education, and the news media. The story takes place within Brazil, but it certainly describes the situation in the US of A.

A democratic nation today could rarely be defeated from outside, but from within, that's a different story.

For at least the next 3 years, a movie like this would not - could not - be made in the US of A.

Ok, i clicked on your thread to come and tell u i was gonna be the first to go troll on the american remake of this movie if there ever was one. Like, why do americans always want to spoil something good by "americanizing" it for their wider, culturally challenged audience?

Then i read your post and it makes sense. What u want isnt a remake of this film, just one that captures the same essence and treats the same subject in a way that is attractive for your countrys moviegoers to go watch and understand, which is a pretty noble thought i believe.

Just keep away from the word remake. A remake, furthermore an ameriacan remake (coming to think about it, arent all remakes american?), means just exactly the opposite of what you want to achieve: the total loss of the movies original essence and message replaced by the same unoriginal stuff on all american movies that makes massive uninterested audiences prone to connect and understand the film better than they would with the original version, for commercial purposes obviously.

Please god dont ever let an american version of Elite Squad happen. I would HATE to see an americanized version of Elite Squad, camon guys, let's make an effort to understand and love movies from other countries. I get that it's a little difficult to understand because to get a full visual on it you have to live in Brasil, even better if it's here in Rio, but if you do a little research I think you can understand it. It's perfect the way it is. If it was a José Padilha movie or series about your country, with another title and *beep* I think it would be fine, but I would die if I saw it being selled as an american version of Elite Squad.

Sorry I wrote original message. What I meant was, could a big budget film in the USA about USA policy's torture and murder of black men get made. José Padilha is a God

reply

That would be cool ;)
