Jose Maria de Eca de Queiroz, ...

... in one of his essays about the European society of his time, told the story of an English girl who had become so infatuated with another that she made her her universal heir. The other girl got married, and the girl of the will died of grief, leading the family of her friend to take to court the issue that the terms of the will be put into effect.
Nowhere in the text of this story is it indicated that Eca was aware of the patently obvious lesbian subtext of that event; obviously he did not know the story of Anne Lister and Ann Walker.

God is subtle, but He is not malicious. (Albert Einstein)
