It was cool how Victor was a 'good guy' at points..

You were in the strange position of rooting for him when the more-evil General guy came knocking. Quite a feat, when you've witnessed him idly stab an innocent girl in the throat at the beginning of the film. I'm maybe giving credit where it isn't due, but it seemed a deliberate ploy to put the audience in the same position as Angel (or indeed any domestic abuse victim) by presenting Victor as the great protector when the action kicked off. Or maybe it was just a net result of overloading proceedings with hyper-evil male characters (was there any real point in the abusive Dad backstory?)

I totally agree with you - the fact that he looked at these girls as his "investment" and was protecting his finances made him (almost) less evil than the other guy. Then, of course, he merely used Angel's vulnerability to punish her for defying him. I was especially pleased when he died. For a moment there, though, I almost sided with him (at least over the other male characters). This movie was too upsetting for me to really say I enjoyed it, but I absolutely thought it was well done!

Actually the character was obviously turning out his hos and keeping them in line. Pimps tend to sweet talk their bitches and give them a little hope to keep them manipulated. He even made the deaf girl into his bottom-bitch, because she was too small and had a birth mark on her face.
The only reason he had problems w/ the Balkan soldiers is because they were going to takeover his business. It was implied that the he pissed off local warlords/mafia that he operated under. They all had Catholic Czech tattoos. I don't know if it was mobster or religious Slavic war tats. I think it was mentioned that Viktor the pimp was once a former militant, who sold out Goran or something.

The thing he did with the key takes him far from any "good guy" label. When he gives it to her, you think "Well, maybe." Then when she tries to escape and finds the key is a fake.......yeah the guy is a pimp and an a**hole.

reply

^ yes.
He wasn't ever good, he manipulated her (that's what they do) but I'm glad you others were "fooled" bc I think that was the directors intention, (I'm not being condescending btw >). By seeming to flip back & forth between emotions/actions, he scares them (which his his main goal) & gives them hope, confuses them, and he can use this manipulation when fear isn't producing the results he wants. I thought it was a great directing choice to make him appear to be nice(er) at times, nice isn't really the right word... Conflicted or "not as bad as you think" might be a better description.
I was even fooled by him once or twice UNTIL the key didn't work, then I knew it was a test and/or manipulation and everything after that was bad intentions.

I disagree. He was a pervert. I never once wanted him to win. I wanted Angel to end up killing him.

He was never good. The only time he acted remotely "nice" to anyone was to keep them in line. That's what pimps do.

That's what I was saying. But there was posts on here where people didn't know what to think. He was a monster... Never actually a nice intention
