After the latest in a string of failures for dramatic playwright Robert Longfellow (Donovan), it is clear that his career is in steep decline. Desperately needing an escape, he leaves his wife behind to visit his mother, as well as an old lover, now a huge celebrity, who is eager to rekindle their relationship. After a brief romantic interlude, Robert"s plans for dinner are abruptly disrupted by the appearance of Gus (David Morse), his mother"s ex-convict neighbor who takes Robert hostage as they forcibly dissect their lives.
