Underrated!

Okay, sure, it's not as good as the '74 film. And the upcoming adaptation by Kenneth Branagh may--probably will--be superior as well.

But this version is still solid, especially for what it is: a made-for-TV film that lacked the budget of the big screen adaptations.

While I agree that it may be a little darker in tone than it needs to be, and that the Catholic elements are strangely overbearing, I still found this film to be well made and enjoyable.

I do have to wonder though, if Suchet and Co. could go back and redo it, would they change anything or are they fully satisfied with their work here?

I stopped by this thread because it's trending and I haven't seen the episode but just for anyone else's info it's on Acorn right now if they want to check it out. I probably will.

Man, that Trending feature really works!

You should give it a watch and report back. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

Also, I made a thread on the main Poirot board that you sound qualified to chime in on, if you're interested in doing that.

I shall report back by the end of the weekend! Here's to trending topics.

Sounds good! Enjoy.

I actually just started reading the book. Not sure if you're aware but a new adaptation directed by Kenneth Branagh is due out later this year.

reply

I will watch anything he directs so that sounds intriguing.

You never reported back...

Funny you should ask! I've actually become obsessed with the series and have watched an episode almost every day. I usually use Britbox because the earlier episodes are better. Some I've watched several times, but a few I haven't gotten around to. I even got my 13 year old son into the show. Unfortunately, since the trolling got so bad I haven't used this site to post as much as I did in the beginning. I saw the new theatrical film too and it was enjoyable, but not in the way that I'll watch it over and over like the show.

Haha, great that you actually replied! I adore the Suchet show and, yes, the earlier episodes are so much better. It's a shame, though, that the trolling stopped you from posting further. Some boards are worse than others.

I wonder why they stopped using Hastings, Japp, and Miss Lemon. Did the show change writers over time?

reply

Yes, the original writers actually left after 2001 and the show was revamped. I do believe that the novels those later episodes were based on did not feature those three characters. But I really love them and a lot of the humour was lost after they left.

I watched this film today, and it was great! I'm a big fan of David Suchet and he was amazing in the version of the film. I don't know why Suchet would want to "redo" it. It's fine just the way it is!
