why didn't he have the keys with him while climbing the tree?

I hope that didn't keep you from enjoying the movie!

1) Maybe he didn't want the keys holding him down, since he already had enough tools to deal with while up in the tree.

2) If he (or his helper) needed something out of the truck, it made more sense for the guy on the ground to have the keys, so he wouldn't have to keep climbing up and down the tree.

3) Maybe his helper was going to be doing other jobs at the same time, some of which might have required him to get different tools out of the truck.

the most likely answer: he TRUSTED that other guy and thought he was a good person because he had shared his food with him when he was hungry. He didn't even think this guy would do something like that.

Or because the movie would've been an hour shorter.

Didn't he say "Just in case" as he tossed the keys down?

Probably figured if he needed something from the truck, or the truck moved Santiago would have easy access to the keys.

Although, he could have just as easily dropped them to the ground.

But of course, they needed to be where Santiago could access them otherwise it would have been a short and not a feature film. LOL

This made me drop a mark from the movie. It just would have been more realistic if Santiago had stolen the keys from his bag or something while he was climbing the tree. Who the hell leaves their keys in the ignition anywhere in the world, let alone downtown LA??????

reply

We all make mistakes. He was probably just excited to start working and get his "business" started.

reply

the keys weren't in the ignition. he left them on the ground on his coat. like someone said earlier, he just trusted Santiago and didn't think that would happen.

reply

Because no good deed goes unpunished.

reply

Stupidity. He seemed to trust Santiago and look how that turned out for him.

My opinion is that it is a dangerous job to be up in the tree so to eliminate distractions and be able to focus on getting the job done and focus on his own safety, he only brings up what is necessary. This means he leaves all the clunky objects from his pockets on the ground. Simple as that. Plus, he didn't even consider the helper to commit such an act.
