Will we ever see OFAH in the same light?!!

I'm probably in the minority here, but I really liked this - but as a sunday night drama, maybe not as a prequel to one of our most successful programmes ever. I thought the actors were well cast and was suprised to find nicholas lyndhurst quite sexy as freddie robdal!!! THE PROBLEM I HAD WAS...Rock n Chips was more bittersweet, with a few comedy moments, and seemed a bit detached from OFAH. Everytime I see OFAH now i'm going to have flashbacks to his early days and think "your mums boss erm, released something, all over her!". The main scar will be rodney's dad - he was quite a dark character and i wasnt expecting that when you have grown up watching rodney the plonker!! I did like this program, i think its just scarred OFAH a bit...

I don't agree simply because we knew about the past before. I don't think seeing changed things, except for making me understand why Del worshipped his mother so much. I really liked it and think it added to the show rather than hurt it.

It was made clear in OFAH that Freddie was a dark character, he was afterall a villain in the true sense, and he did use people to get what he wanted, even Joan was used a bit given he raided the Cinema where she worked off information she had inadvertently given him.
Was good to show the programme in a sligfhtly different way.

He was a better man than Reg in every way

Nah, this is pretty much what I had pictured whilst watching OFAH. I think they did an exceptional job, this was brilliant. I hope it doesn't become a series though, this works so much better as a one-off.

The only thing that annoy me somewhat was the fact that Del boy and Reggie were the same height as Freddie the Frog, whereas in OFAH they are both much shorter than Rodney. But that's mostly just nitpicking.

reply

In general its a great piece of work. I have to say I also felt Del and Reg weren't as well cast as they could have been. In OFAH both the man are very stout and the height difference with Rodney is really important as it sticks out like a sore thumb.

As I have said in previous posts, this show simply couldn't have been a comedy like OFAH because we already know what a tragic story it is. As a comedy drama it worked brilliantly and was something we so badly need on British TV at the moment.

an interesting point. You and Richard are both saying about Dell, and Reg being to tall. But to be honest we actually don't know for certain if Freddy is supposed to be as tall as Rodney. Just because it is the same actor doesn't mean a thing. I personally look very much like my farther did at my age but I am about five, or six inches taller than he was.

reply

Actually, Freddie was described as being "very tall and handsome" in The Frog's Legacy.

reply

Yes but even in the prequel he is still taller than everyone else. Also the fathers hight could be explained by the simple fact that old people tend to shrink.

I agree this should only be a one off and not a series but I really enjoyed it.

I was impressed how believable Nicholas Lyndhurst was as Freddie after all the years we got used to him as Rodney, with the two characters being so different.

I really liked the dynamic between Del and Joan as well, bringing into perspective the loving way he talks about her in OFAH, and the references to things talked about in OFAH, like playing pirates with Slater.

Would rather keep the fond memories of OFAH than taint it with this sad attempt of a series. Lets face it, david jason is a one of a kind, as was the chemistry between him and rodney.

The problem with R&C, held up against the Frog's Legacy, it works well and ties in with everything up to that point in OFAH.... Problem is, it was round about the time of Frog's Legacy that the writers started tinkering with the character back grounds and stuff, and suddenly you have massive plot holes appearing in the timelines and stuff...........

Freddy was nowhere near what I expected him to be like.... the image was always a nice approachable guy that everyone enjoyed the company of... yet nothing about this really would shine through.

Has it scarred OFAH? I do not think as much as the last 3 specials did.......
