Where exactly was the police station?

I get that it was supposed to take place in southern Florida, presumably near the Everglades, but anything more specific? I don't recall them saying what city/town they're in, but it has to be big enough to support a rash of murders through four seasons. At the same no one from larger city homicide units (Miami, Tampa) are evidently assigned Jim Longworth's jurisdiction. Yet in one episode, they work on a case in St. Augustine, FL, which seems like it would be a five-hour drive. And there's also an episode where Carlos is at the crime scene and calls Jim, who is visiting Callie in Atlanta, and Jim makes his way there while the cops and body discoverers are still there. That was a bit of a stretch.

My assumption is that it's in or very near Tampa. Tampa Tech appears to be a local college that appears or is referenced in many episodes. I think Florida also handles police jurisdiction a bit differently, but I'm struggling to remember what's unique about it. This may help the show explain how Jim is involved over local authorities. Though the show is not the strongest with details...

Florida has an agency called FDLE. It is Florida's state law enforcement agency, and it has a criminal investigation and forensics department. Their jurisdiction is the entire state of Florida. I think that's the "agency" Jim joined.

Ah, that makes more sense. I wasn't entirely sure whether the FDLE was made up or not while watching the show, but if it has state jurisdiction it makes things clearer.

In addition to the geographical liberties taken, the FDLE is not a line response agency as was shown. They do not work with the highway patrol as was shown. They mainly assist local law enforcement, operate crime labs, handle domestic security, and perform executive investigations at the direction of the Governor.

They seem to have thought the audience were idiots and that we didn't pay attention to things like this.

In one episode they mention it's a two hour drive to Tampa, while they were in their substation. Two episodes later they are talking about Daniel going to Tampa Tech. They were on this very campus many times throughout the day making it impossible to drive back to the substation and then back to th school as many times as they did and still have daylight.

Another episode they are in St Augustine which is clear across the state yet they make it seem like there is no travel at all.

Callie talks about a job in Port St Lucien which is several hours from any area of the Glades.

In the episode where Callie is taken hostage they mention the nearest hospital is 45 minutes away, which would be uncommon for any type of metro area.

I just gave figured everyone who had anything to do with this show failed high school geography.
