don't trust the 5.8 IMDb rating, more like a '7' or '8'.

As of right now (June 24, 2014) this movie has a weighted IMDb average of 5.8. But that seems a bogus number.

Looking at the votes, 11% of them are "1" and the lowest ratings are by men of all ages. It isn't clear why they vote that way, but there is no way in any film universe this could be considered worthy of a "1" rating.

If you ignore those for a minute, the most common votes cluster in the 6, 7, and 8 range, and is probably what a totally unbiased rating would be. Personally I give it "8" because it is very well made, with really fine acting, all of a very interesting and worthwhile story. I would not criticize anyone who rates it "9" or "10", it depends on how the film moves you.

So, if anyone is reading this to try to decide whether to take the time to see this movie, I say DO IT if the subject interests you at all. Winnie Mandela is a fascinating historical figure in South Africa's struggle for equality. The film covers the good, the bad, the ugly of Winnie, it is worthwhile to see the whole picture.

Plus, Jennifer Hudson shows that she is not only one of the best singers today, she has also developed into a fine actress. Near the end I was starting to believe she really was Winnie.
