an excellent film

I saw this film yesterday at the Chelsea Cinemas during the Tribeca Film Festival. I loved it. It is a quiet film that tells a story through excellent acting. I miss these kind of great films. Dennis Farina should receive some award nominations for his fine work.

I agree 100%. Films like this are so rare and yet they really shouldn't be. They are low budget, so low risk, great actors are not in short supply and scripts about the human condition are hardly thin on the ground.

For some annoying reason, great flicks like this never really capture a decent audience, which says more about the masses watching movies than these kinds of small quality films.

The masses want films in 3D, color, and they want talkies.... and they enjoy texting during films. They want plenty of "action" so they do not have to think about plot. Do you think THE ARTIST is a film that a mainstream audience will appreciate?

You're preaching to the choir. :)

I did like the film and I thought Farina was excellent but I couldn't help but thinking that the story was a tad too melodramatic and clichéd for my taste.

Still - a good movie.

reply

Agreed - good performances, but a lame script.

This film obviously wasn't meant to be a mystery thriller, but not only was the whole plot progression pretty obvious early on, it was also cliched.

I mean nothing *at all* that we haven't seen before - multiples times.

I wonder if Mr. Maggio would consider having someone else do the writing...

And just too damned slow.

To an extent, yes, but producers/studios also are to blame. They control what cities it shows up in, how many screens it gets and the marketing. To blame the population for this movie's lack of exposure is unfair and is ignorant how the system works in Hollywood. Take for instance The Master by PTA - that is a slow burner with little to no action and it'll find its audience, small it may be. Why? Because it has a studio that knows how to market and distribute it = Weinstein.

It is alot of things to me,but Farina's character reminds me of the characters
like yours truly and the hundreds of Irish and Italian guys I hung on the corner with for too long.I do not have the adjectives to give the film its just do.
I caught Gary Cole right off.

I gave this film a look this morning and I quite liked it. I do agree with some other posters that the story was a little cliche but it had some heart.
Dennis Farina has never been anything less than a completely solid actor. I always liked him alot, hes got a lot of charisma and hes naturally gifted.
If anyone shouldve played this, aging, broke, short money Chicago hustler, it was Dennis Farina.
I loved when he cashed out his bank account asked for forty singles and an elastic.

Just caught this one, wow Farina was great, just perfect. This performance made me appreciate his whole body of work. I liked this better than Gran Torino.

I saw this movie last night & loved it. My favorite scene is when he calls the police station & tells the operator what to tell Stan. Farina used profanty great.

I just watched this and totally loved it, way more than I did Gran Torino, perhaps because I loved Farina way more than I do Clint. I did not find it too cliched, some, but not overmuch. One big oops, which I note in the lamb post, kept me from giving it a 10. But easily my favorite moment was the brief smile on Jenny's face in the depot when she reads the news story. Beautiful. The world was off her shoulders; she could now just be herself and a mom. As for the popularity of this and others like it, heck, it DID have a chase scene! Perhaps not enough explosions, vampires or time warps. Alas.

Gran Torino was great, and had a much better pace.
