Why did Earth 2 appear closer as the movie progressed? In the the beginning it was a small blue dot and at the end it was closer than the Moon. Any thoughts?

Yes, but the physics of that would've caused both to break apart.

I like another poster's idea that the change in size is symbolic of the two planets learning more about one another, and being "closer" to making some exchanges of people.
