The ending explained, very simply

Rhoda 2 traveled to the Other Earth because there was no John to give her ticket to. Meaning The wife and child survived the crash, but not the husband.

Rhoda 2 never went to MIT, she was also convicted of vehicular manslaughter. She appears more "cleaned up" because she's an international celebrity from another planet.

How do I know she never went to MIT? Because that would not serve the narrative. Ask yourself, what's the point of seeing Rhoda 2, what's it tell us that could be important?

All the ending stuff aside, this is the story of someone who does something unforgivable, then gives up her biggesst dream in order to make amends for it, beautifully told and superbly acted.

As a sidenote, I believe the husband also wrote a letter, but didn't ever want to believe he could possibly win, hence his anger about Rhoda sharing she also wrote one, because they had the same dream. The minutia is in the acting.

reply

Both earths were parallel until one saw the other, per news release. Therefore anything can change as of the night of the crash. Therefore the crash may not have happened on Earth 2 even if everything else leading up to it did. That is why she told John "they could be alive" when she left the ticket on his table.

Rhoda 2 showing up on Earth 1 proves the wife and kid were alive because Rhoda 2 had no one to feel guilty about and give her ticket away.

So many people got this wrong.

reply

Wouldn't Rhoda 2 feel guilty about killing the husband? Wouldn't Rhoda 2 give her ticket to the widowed wife or something? And how was John 1 able to just use her ticket? The ticket was won by her, I doubt the millionaire financier of the trip would let one of her friend's use the ticket for himself since he didn't even enter the contest. It's not fair to the other contestants. You can't say John may have possibly also wrote a letter, that's a huge stretch with little basis (the acting thing is also a huge stretch) just trying to cover the unexplained plot hole.

reply

Perhaps it was a 'Return' ticket so the husband gave Rhoda 2 the ticket to go to earth...

I'm glad to see discussions about the ending - It's been helpful.

John didn't die in Earth 2. John 2 shows up in the symmetry shot at around 44-45 minutes. One shot shows Rhonda 1 (wearing janitor clothing) looking up, the next shot Rhonda 2 (wearing a sun dress) looking up, the next shot John 1 is next to all his pills, and the next shot shows John 2 outside working looking up.

reply

Wow! Manilookgood, You are 100% correct. I've seen this movie three times and never noticed/ realised that! You are amazing!

Why would the wife leave her son behind?

What movie were you watching...? During the montage at 44 min she's not wearing a sun dress, she's wearing a button up shirt looking up, carrying groceries to his house. And when he's working outside it clearly shows Rhoda and him on the same earth, he even wears the same shirt throughout the next scene.

Nowhere in the context of the movie does the narrative ever imply we are seeing things from "the other earth"

A further clue is the position of the moons in those shots. Manilookgood is 100% correct.

The contest winner was chosen by the CEO of the company, he is a human, not a robot, he can give the ticket to whomever he chooses. If she explained why she wanted to give her ticket to John what person could possibly deny that request?!

reply

Quite right. He gave her the ticket in the first place because of the story she told; if she went to him and said, look, there's another side to this story and I want to give the ticket to the man whose life I almost destroyed, it's entirely in keeping with what we know of his character from him having picked her in the first place for him to have agreed to her request.

reply

Rhoda will have never have got the ticket in the first place if the crash hadn't happened and she had gone to prison as she states in her application that because she is a convict she may be the right candidate. So the crash must have happened so I am still at a lost to as what has happened at the end.

reply

Rhonda 2 arrives a good while after John 1 left. I imagine when John 1 arrived on Earth 2 the people there would have been pretty curious about his story - I imagine it would have been huge news indeed. With that in mind,Rhonda 2 would have been extremely shocked about what she found out about the tragedy and entailing story of Rhonda 1 back on Earth 1. Therefore not only would she have a big reason to visit - and perhaps save - herself but, I imagine the millionaire funding it all on Earth 2 would have been even more taken by the story than the millionaire on Earth 1 was by the one he received. Not only that, but the millionaire on Earth 2 would have been intrigued by the knowledge of his choice on Earth 1 anyway, as would anyone, so his interest and offer were probably inevitable based on these thoughts.

reply

People on earth 1 looked to the left and on earth 2 to the right (or the other way round doesn't matter). When she crashed you can see her hit the side of the mother and the son. On earth 2 she probably hit the other side making it deadly for John but not for his family.

Rhoda 2 would not give the ticket to either the mother or the son who survived on earth 2 because she has only one ticket and she will not build up this deep relationship with them as Rhoda 1 did with their husband. Maybe they even encouraged her to go to look for their husband. Or she never saw the mother visiting the "grave" of John so she never met the family, since everything is different after the earths spotted each other.

However, the crash is likely to have happened since she got the ticket because of the convict thing. She probably wanted to see if John was still alive on Earth 1.
Now both Rhodas have closure that at least on one of the two earths the family is together again.

Rhoda 2 looks different and more cleaned up because she visits another earth as a celebrity. Of course she wouldn't go their with a hoodie.

Thats my take on things and seems to be the best ending, most "logical" and pleasing.

The only thing that bugs me, is that why didn't Rhoda 1 hear about Rhoda 2 coming to earth, landing, etc., there must be tons of cameras and newsorganisations orbiting her as she is the "alien" from outer space. This makes the ending "It is all imagined" a little more attractive.

Of course there is the theory the crash never happend on e2, John 1 gave R2 his return ticket so she can space travel, but then Rhonda 2 would be "stuck" on earth 1 until the next rocket departs which could take a while, and since she is happy on earth 2 because no accident, etc, it seems unlikely for me.

reply

I think you've got it, and to answer the unresolved query, one might for imagine either that in Earth 1 Rhoda intentionally insulated herself from all further news about the exchange mission, or that the identity of the contest-winning exchange visitors was not to be revealed on either planet until the missions had proceeded successfully. After all, if you're going to send an ordinary person on what would naturally be a dangerous mission to another planet, it seems quite reasonable to withhold their identity until you know whether you need to frame the story as one of triumph or tragedy.

reply

You're making a big mistake by taking the scene literally.
As it's the case in many films, the final scene is an opportunity for symbolism. The important thing isn't how Rhoda 2 came here or why, it's what it means on a symbolic level. The appearance of the second Earth was also symbolism. It's the place that's basically just like Earth but for the car accident or its outcome, the place where Rhoda imagines an alternate reality where she hadn't killed two people. That's why it's so important to her.

So, Rhoda is a broken person since the accident, like John.
First, she tries to help him directly out of guilt and shame. They have sex. He thinks he's falling in love with her. She confesses what she did, and he rejects her.
Then, she sacrifices her shot at living a new life by giving him the ticket, by explaining to him that his wife and kid(s) may be still alive on Earth 2. She realizes he needs it more than her. It gives John something missing from his life at that point: purpose and hope, as you can see on TV just before the mission starts, where he's again full of confidence and focus. She accepts her own fate: she'll stay in the world where she caused harm and death.
The gift still frees Rhoda from her depression, as you see her putting back furniture and flowers in her bedroom, which was previously bare walls.

So, it isn't very important to know how Rhoda 2 got there. This is not a cliffhanger for Another Earth 2 (Another Another Earth?????). We're not even supposed to spend much time guessing what happens to John in outer space. The important thing is that Rhoda the cleaning lady is face to face with Rhoda the MIT graduate in an alternate universe. She sees the side of her personality that she had put away due to the grief and the guilt. She may become whole again, or she may not be at ease with this part of herself, but she'll have to deal with it.

After seeing this director's other movie "I Origins" I don't think he's a symbolistic director. Some directors lean more in either a narrative, logic or symbolistic dominant style.

After watching "I Origins" i'd have to say he leans heavily in the narrative/logic, and is not a heavily symbolic director (say like Stanley Kubrick)

Nice post man. Agree with you completely.

reply

I absolutely agree with this interpretation of the ending.

reply

Yes, I agree with you, too, except I took it literally, as you explained it in your last paragraph.

reply

I'm surprised so few people on the board favor this view of the ending.
The idea that Rhoda 2 is a successful MIT graduate, who either just happens to be among the select few professionals to go on the mission, or wrote an equally moving essay about something else, seems far-fetched and doesn't support a symmetrical conclusion to the plot very well (literally or symbolically).
The interpretation described here aligns better with key points of the story and adds depth and a beautiful equilibrium.
Of course, the ending is as open as the rest of the film, but if I would settle on a version I would choose this one. Thanks to the OP for the insight.

reply

yeah vbrunner i think people naturally try to think of a 'happy' ending, to most people this appears to be Rhoda having gone to MIT, but that's totally not what the story is about, it's about redemption and the hard journey to moving on after your life is transformed

reply

I must be one DUMB MF'ER because I just don't get the ending.

1/ I agree she just can't give the ticket away to him. So the whole point mute.
2/ Even if she could give the ticket to John, does that mean John and family live happily ever after on Earth 2 - presuming John on Earth 2 was the only one killed.
3/ Rhonda on Earth 2 goes to Earth to meet herself as John go to his family on Earth 2. - What did they then did do - start a cat fight or become best friends.
4/ Man, I was totally confused and peeved when the credits rolled.
5/ Two hours wasted.
6/ OFF TOPIC: Gattaca(1997) was MUCH better.
7/ Gezz I even preferred the first few episodes of of EARTH 2 (TV Mini-series)

B!LL!

PS: I've read all the previous 'theories', but still don't get it, as many of them are conflicting anyway!

I wonder if there is any commentary on the DVD/Blu-Ray to explain a few things? - Namely the ending.

Plus I was hoping for a rocket ship/shuttle launch, that kinda would have made my two hours worth it, a LITTLE.

(8/ Earth 2 seemed to stay in the position relative to the moon. Rather odd that.)

9/ Rant over - sorry about all that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

Actually, the point would be moot.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

Exactly.

reply

Why is everyone talking like we know what happened on Earth 2? All we know is that Rhoda 2 didn't give her ticket away. Anything else is pure speculation... and that's kind of the point.

Only the closed mind is certain.

reply

The ending spoiled the whole film. It was lazy. The concept was good and running along fine and then the writer ran out of ideas. What sunk it for me was that surely the arrival of Earth 2 travelers on Earth would have been the greatest event ever to have occurred in the history of mankind and as such every second of it would have been covered by the world's media. How on earth could Rhoda have been unaware that Rhoda 2 had arrived on Earth? As for the idea that these travelers could then just wander around on their own without attracting any interest from anybody else just hammers a nail into the film's coffin. It could have been a great film but it ended up sucking dog balls.

reply

Rhoda 2 arrived on Earth 1, because the crash never happened on Earth 2 - If it had, she would've given the ticket to John

Seeing her on Earth 1 shows us that John's family (as well as another John, you'd assume) are alive and well on Earth 2

She is smartly dressed, because the accident never happened, and her life is going well.

Great ending, how one single shot can tell us so much, and answer so many questions.

reply

I think this is the only answer. She probably got the ticket on the other side, and she is doing well there! So if the accident not happen, she is ok, and the husband, found his family and who knows arranged to get the earth 2 copy to get back home.

reply

It wasn't lazy at all. It spelled it out perfectly. Also, the movie never said that the travelers arriving from Earth 2 WEREN'T covered by the world's media. It never said that Rhoda was unaware that Rhoda 2 was arriving. Just because it didn't show that (and why should it? It wasn't necessary) doesn't mean it didn't happen.

This is the most amazing film I have seen in years. The fact that anyone can say it sucked just because the ending didn't go the exactly as they preferred or because they didn't fully understand it blows my mind. But then, what else would I expect from the IMDB board, which is often on par with youtube comments!

reply

I fully agree, the ending was brilliant! It left just enough for you to figure the rest out in perfect symmetry! Great movie, loved it.

There is no actual answer to what had really happened and, consequently, why or how Rhoda 2 came to earth. The important thing is Rhoda, after everything she has gone through and done, finds redemption and at the end of the movie she 'finds herself' on a methaphorical level. This seeing and finding oneself situation is a referance to that old man, who blinded himself because he didn't wanna see himself anymore and bleached his ears, leaving himself deaf. When Rhoda goes to his room, he says "You are probably wondering why. No. You know why." And Rhoda writes "Forgive" in his palm, making him cry.

Was she helping him, or herself? Was it the earth that she was going to run away, or herself? Maybe, just like that old man, she didn't wanna see herself anymore.

So, unlike that oldman who couldn't forgive and didn't wanna see himself, she was able to 'forgive' herself and that is why Rhoda 2 was in Earth 1, in front of Rhoda 1, so that she could see herself once again. She can look at herself now that she has found forgiveness.

Having said that, this means that none of your guesses are true, but at the same time any of them can explain the ending as long as they make sense.

Very insightful...I think you are correct. Thanks for the great post!

BUT as for your "sidenote"...I have to disagree...John was actually happy for her that she won the contest(although he wanted he to stay on Earth 2 due his growing feelings for her). He only got angry after she told him her story of how she caused the crash. I don't believe that he had entered the contest....my opinion...
