4 to 4.5/5 movie but-*spoilers*

What was that ending? It was horrible and essentially made the movie, and Rose's character development pointless.

reply

Definitely not a happy ending and a setup for a sequel.

It all came back full circle where this "curse" if you will is never ending and unescapable. I hated the ending myself. I felt no sense of relief when she seemingly destroyed the demon that took the form of her mother nor did I feel despondent when her efforts proved nil. The movie, as long as it was didn't do a good enough job for the audience to feel connected with the main character outside of a few flashbacks.

reply

Yeah, I didn't like the ending. It's a 7/10 from me.

The "smile" demon or whatever makes the person hallucinate for long periods of time, like when the demon was apparently set on fire near the end and was burning, then the house explodes and collapses...

...but it was all concocted by the demon in her head to make her think she killed it, when she didn't.

As for the kid's birthday party where he unwraps the dead cat and the girl is there smiling and the main character falls into a coffee table, shattering it and lacerating herself - notice how the atmosphere changes in the room when it moves to a POV outside of hers, as if she's hallucinating the cat's death.

Or where she packs the model railway train into the present... or was it the dead cat that she'd noticed had gone missing?

This movie messes with your sense of perception, and that's one reason why it's good.

reply

It get that, but it doesn't work because it defeats the point of the movie and nullifies everything the protag was aiming to do especially when it comes to the "facing your past" ascept of the movie.

reply

It's kinda funny; the scene where she was inside the store, buying a train. It was transitioned oddly, and the tone felt weird too as it ended. Turns out, that probably never even happened. So when we see her packing the present, she was actually packing the dead cat.

reply

Turns out, that probably never even happened

The store scene did happen, when the kid is unwrapping his gift, the box is from "Keanny Model Railroad Shoppe". We have to assume that the store (hence that scene) was real.

I've seen three movies that could be classed as horror, namely The Black Phone, Nope and Smile, and to be honest, I think The Black Phone is the absolute BEST of the three.

reply

I've seen those three as well, but also recently saw Barbarian and THAT was a heckuva scary movie. Best I've seen in ages. The Black Phone was also very good, but Barbarian (which also features a creepy basement) was exceptional.

reply

I think I've heard of Barbarian, but I thought that was a Conan-type movie with an ancient warrior or something, just from the title alone.

reply

I can see how a person could think that from the title alone. But it's definitely not that kind of film. The title refers to the barbaric actions of one of the central characters.

reply

I thought it was also a word game with "Airbnb" since you can spell "Barbarian" with its letters.

reply

Clever! Hadn't even considered that.

reply

I agree

We know at least 19 people committed suicide in front of others and passed it along to someone else (and there have been more: the inmate says he found a chain in Brazil). So we know how the story has ended for most people. By following Rose, the movie immediately suggested to us that her story is supposed to end differently. Otherwise, why are we watching her instead of the others who fell victim to the curse? But she just goes out like all the others before her.

I have a feeling the filmmakers were already thinking of a sequel, so they wanted the curse to win in this edition
