I know. it sounded like chinatownese

reply

in the scenes that take place in china town it's mostly cantonese.

I'm watching it now... and i grew up in a household that spoke both taiwanese and mandarin.

During the subtitled scenes they were speaking mandarin pretty accurately in my opinion.

Jamie Chung's chinese-american accent, however, is horrendous!! I was cringing everytime she opened her mouth.

reply

I speak some mandarin too. But I guess because I'm american and not Chinese I understood Jamie Chung better than I did the native speaker, probably because both Chung and I have horrendous mandarin accents.

I could only catch one or two words at a time from the native speaker. But I agree, the mandarin sounded pretty accurate to me as well.

reply

But there is no Taiwanese language; they speak Mandarin in Taiwan.

That's funny, because Wikipedia begs to differ --

Maybe do a little research before you troll, hm?

it's a variation of Hokkien dialect used in southern China and some Chinese in South East Asia.

It is as much a new language as Australian English.

reply

Still listed as an official language in various places. A simple Google search could have avoided that user looking like a troll.

I love this site but I wish people would stop using it as some sort of oracle.

The character Mr Leung speaks perfect Mandarin.

...a little fantastic, and fleeting, and out of reach.

reply

What the crap are you talking about? I am a Chinese who speaks and writes Chinese. It was perfectly reasonable Chinese.
