Joe Lynch the podcaster/human being vs Joe Lynch the director

I am a faithful listener to Joe Lynch and Adam Green's podcast (The Movie Crypt), and any interview I've read with him makes me want to have him over for dinner. He seems like a smart, funny, self-depreciating, generally cool guy. But his movies - just don't like 'em. Like, they take unfunny or overly-gory gags too far, I guess. Maybe it's because gross-out humor doesn't appeal to me? And I say that as a life-long horror fan (I'm 34 year old woman, who first watched The Shining on cable at age 5 with my dad. for the record, my dad let me watch anything I wanted on cable because the nudity was blurred out, as if nudity is the main issue with a young child watching Hellraiser - yes, I slept with a nightlight until I was 13 lol).

I really WANT him to make a good movie, because I find him so likable! This was the best that thing of his that I've seen, and I stretched to give it a 5 - great cast, great idea, but the execution was just really lacking IMO. I feel like I'd prefer watching him discuss other people's movies than a movie he actually made himself:/

They're coming to get you, Barbara!

Wow, I feel almost the exact same way. And being a horror geek myself. I find myself REALLY trying to like Lynch's and Green's stuff but By the time I'm done with all of their films or projects (excluding the hatchet series and Holliston) I always feel they could of been executed differently for the better. But the good thing is it seems like they've made a lot of friends because they keep working. Lynch making "Everly" and Green making "Digging up the marrow". So hopefully in the future if they keep working, and get better. But it also wouldn't suprise me if they just keep doing what they're doing :/

Just because one is a nice guy doesn't mean they are going to be an incredible director. But of course this film was taken out of his hands.

Everly was quite good. I never understood why people love Wrong Turn 2. Felt like any other straight to video horror sequel to me. He obviously has talent....just hasn't had that magic project yet. Everly so far is the closest to that but if that's really the best he has in him...then...I don't how to finish that up.

I assume since you listen to The Movie Crypt you know that the released version of this film is only a shell of what his version was, and that he along with the cast have pretty much disowned the version of the movie that we got. I'm pretty sure that it was the Don Coscarelli episode where they go into the most detail about this, but it might have been Darren Lynn Bousman episode (if it wasn't either it was somewhere around that time of the show)

If you find that episode he mentions the fact that the first half is the most true to his cut of it, so I think it's most fair to judge his direction on this movie from there. Personally, I thought the first half was great and really showed that he has talent. I'm not really familiar with his other movies, but from what I've heard Everly is awesome and stayed true to what he wanted to make, so if you haven't seen it you might as well try it if you want to find a way to like his work (obviously if you don't like it then you're just not a part of the intended audience)

Knowing both of them personally I can say they are great guys with a love and passion for film.
