A movie that just tries too hard

Hey all,

I understand fully why this movie is so highly rated here on IMDB rating, but I must say it is a bit silly to give it such a high rating simply for the nerd factor.

It had great source material and some top notch actors but they really just threw it all to waste. Most of the movie was boring, nonsensical or full of unnecessary cursing (easy way to up the word count on a poor quality script...).

Don't get me wrong, I went in to this movie expecting silly enjoyment and a fun time. Instead what I got was beyond boredom and pain from seeing such wasted talents and content.

All in all it was just poorly directed I think and needed a better script with far less cursing. Goes way overboard on the usage of curse words. Also if you don't have the special fx budget, it is so easy to go alternative ways rather than how they did the transformation demon. Especially having just showed the dragon on the car which looks as good quality as the transformed demon... like seriously?

Such a disappointment and such a waste of great nerdy material. In the right hands this could have been an epic comedy, instead we got this crap :'(

The movie you saw wasnt the directors vision though. The producers took control away from him and edited the movie to their liking because they wanted to dumb it down for a wider audience. So a lot of what makes the movie great is missing.

I'd like to read about that. Do you have a link?

They talk about it a bit in this article. (there is a link in that article for more info as well) But if you google; knights of badassdom producers cut and directors cut; you'll find a whole slew of articles related to the matter.

Hope this helps. :)

This makes a lot of sense, I was very confused as there are so many scenes in the trailers that are not in the movie.

Anyway thanks for sharing the article.

I hope they release the director's cut. If you look at certain other movies that have received many different cuts, the director's cut tends to be the best version, while the others completely cut out key plot points or completely ruin the story flow.

(I Am Legend for example, I don't know if it was without or with the consent of the director though but before releasing the film they heavily edited it and removed key plot scenes and replaced them with nonsense)

I had high hopes for this movie, but your post explains a lot as to why this movie has disappointed me so much.

It's a shame too as it could have been a great start for Peter Dinklage in going from a tv show to films. Hopefully his next film will be a lot better than this one. I'd hate to see him become known just for Game of Thrones.

I was also very surprised this week when I saw Jimmi Simpson in House of Cards, he actually has talent but yet again, it was lost in this film.

I fully agree with OP

I thought it was awful. I was looking forward to it after the trailer but all the good bits are in the trailer. The scoring on imdb is very strange. It was an 8.8 a few days ago now it is 7.7. Clearly a bunch of people trying to promote the movie have voted. This deserves less than a 6 for sure. Spoiler alert just in case:

Killing Peter Dinklage half way through was the worst thing they could have done. He was the only good thing in the movie.

I'm starting to think that no one actually saw this movie, but gave it a high rating because of the cast.

It's really bad.

reply

I feel the same way, I can't help but wonder if people didn't jump to rating it after seeing the trailer lol

reply

I agree with you. This could've been such a great movie, instead what we got was this *beep*

I don't agree about the cursing, I didn't even notice it.

reply

How could have this been a great movie? With an entirely different script and idea? Sure the idea of the this casp in a larping movie was intriguing and I was excited about it when I first heard about it, but this movie fails on every level possible, truly a massive pile of dog *beep* Probably the most unoriginal film I have seen this decade. There is no possible version that could salvage this train wreck. It simply SUCKS.

reply

I understand fully why this movie is so highly rated here

LOL no. You don't understand apparently/

reply

I do, its because either like others have said, the people rated it purely based on the actors but never saw the movie.

Or because many hardcore geeks and larpers have seen this movie and simply loved it due to the fact it is one of the few movies that puts LARP in the limelight.

I only have one friend who does real life LARP and he went insane for this movie (meaning he loved it). Granted he only considers a movie a real movie if it has a happy ending... so yeah...

I fail to see any of your complaints in this film...

I've watched it 10 times and it get's better every time. I wasn't bored ever, from start to finish i was in this film. NONSENSICAL?? This is every nerd I knows wet dream... Jesus I mean this movie was written for a very specific group... and for that group it is A+. AS for cursing... really?? If you were going thru what they were... you'd be cussing too (P.S. There is no word count in scripts.. It's not a high school paper)

And what is wrong with the special F/X? OH poor you.. are you upset they used practical F/X when they could have made every bit of blood and gore and transformation and the monster all digital??? It was awesome practical F/X that more movies should have!

As for this turd of of a comment "Such a disappointment and such a waste of great nerdy material. In the right hands this could have been an epic comedy, instead we got this crap" I just have to assume that your some 12 to 14 year old boy living at his mommies house trying to sound like a big boy but coming off like an ignorant snot pissing and moaning about something that went way above your head and you don't get the funny. Try watching the movie when your older and wiser and see if you get it then.

Well as an old time role player from way back I loved it. Sure it was hammy, very hammy to be true but I still enjoyed it greatly. My only gripe was that Hung got killed so early on as Peter Dinklage is always great to watch.
