Descriptions of Geddy's voice were hilarious!

Rat caught in a wringer.
Hamster in overdrive.
The dead howling in Hades.
Mickey Mouse on helium.
Cat being chased with a blowtorch up its ass.

Considering those same critics probably thought Bob Dylan had a great voice, you can understand why they have zero credibility.

reply

Zero credibility? Say what you will about his physical limitations and eccentric delivery, but Bob Dylan's voice has character, wit, humor, intimacy and personality -- expressive human qualities that are completely alien to Geddy Lee.

In the 70s, Geddy typically belted out Neil Peart's preposterous lyrics with an insufferable overbearing screechiness -- like Robert Plant meets Ethel Merman. I guess he needed to be heard somehow over Neil's elephantine battery of percussion implements and Alex's dull and noisy guitar. I'm surprised that he has completely wrecked his voice and given himself tinnitus by now.

I remember as a little kid, growing up listening to "Tom Sawyer" on classic rock radio, I always found Geddy's voice very unique and strange. I didn't dislike it, but I didn't particularly like it either.

But a funny thing happened. The more I listened (and to a broader sampling of his work from over the years), the more the voice grew on me. Now it's like mother's milk, and Geddy is at least in my top 10 favorite rock vocalists of all time.

That's kinda how it was for me to.

Also I can say that early on I didn't like the band as a whole. I was more KISS, Van Halen, AC/DC - Rush was for the nerds. But that started to change, and one night I heard Jacob's Ladder in just the right mindset and it hit me like a ton of bricks how F'ing great it was. Then I really got into Hemispheres and it really took off from there. Lifelong fan ever since.

According to my wife, he sounds like a woman.

Geddy is an amazing musician. But his voice sounds like a frog in a blender.

The difference between Bob Dylan and Geddy is that Bob Dylan is actually singing songs with meaningful lyrics. I am not sure what the hell Geddy is singing.

reply

Geddy Lee is singing songs with meaningful lyrics as well. They just don't mean anything to you, just as Dylan's songs mean nothing to me.

I can appreciate the craft but not be a fan. Can you?

All Art is pretense.

reply

Unlike Dylan, Geddy is a virtuoso at playing a musical instrument.

reply

Hey now, let's not drag Bob Dylan's name through the mud in this.

reply

Similar to the cat and the blowtorch comparison a Boston critic said Geddy's voice sounded like a cat being thrown into a fire. I believe that review was in 1977.
