We used to have the tightest BLACK sitcoms...what the heck happened???

I just don't get it...you had shows like "Good Times", "A Different World", "Martin", "Living Single", "Between Brothers", "Fresh Prince of Bel Air", "The Waynes Brothers", "Jamie foxx show" and the list goes on and on and on. ALL of these shows were creative and funny and classic! You could watch them over and over and still fall out your seat laughing (and even learn a lesson in the midst of the jokes). Even the ones that didn't last long that should have were great (ex: "Between Brothers"). What the heck happened when the 2000's kicked in? Sure you had some funny shows like "One on One" and "The Parkers"....but years later why are shows like "House of Payne" and "Are We There Yet" the "top" black sitcoms out??? Naw buddy, more like the ONLY black sitcoms out. The #1 funniest show in America? "House of Payne"??? Give me a break.

Are We There Yet could be a GREAT show...but the writing must be better than this. Hopefully the show will get better, but I think people have gotten so lazy that they just want to create anything that imitates a Tyler Perry work and they think black people gon just LOVE it. Essence Atkins was amazing on "Half & Half", cuz the writing was on point. Same for Terry Crews in "Everybody Hates Chris"...you fit people with roles that almost suit there natural personality. For once could a good show come out in 2010 that is actually FUNNY and not forced laughter? I get more ashamed as time goes by. Until then, I'm just gonna keep watching all the classic black shows in syndication. Cuz apparaently theses "new" writers need to take a look at the classic shows and see what they are missing. You can make a show about today's times and it still be funny, but not many are succeeding at that.

reply

Agreed 100%. I really didn't see the chemisty between Crews and Atkins at all. I mean, there were some funny moments, but boy were they few and far in between!! I think they are both great actors, but for this sitcom, nope!

You are right, all those shows you named are on TVONE and that's where most of my energies are spent. I think House of Payne is pretty funny, but the plots and episodes are SO unrealistic man!!

I agree, I thought last night when I was watching the show, WHO, is exactly writing this material? There were so many one liner references to current events (Tiger Woods for instance) that did not "fit" what they were talking about.

Overall, a great cast, but the writing and the laugh tracks have got to go. I don't see this show lasting long!!

reply

This will not last long.

This was one of the worst decisions TBS ever made, giving Ice Cube a weekly series to work with. Cube is NOT only the star, but in charge of creative control over this series,as well as producing and directing several episodes.

But I do agree with you....I too remember we had good black-oriented sitcoms.
But remember when FOX had those good black sitcoms like "In Living Color","Roc","Living Single",and "The Martin Lawrence Show",aka "Martin" to name a few. That was the FOX of yesteryear. What the hell happened????

The last black sitcom to grace a major television network was BROTHERS on FOX.
They thought it was funny, but it wasn't. CCH Pounder and Carl Weathers? Michael Strayhorn and Daryl Mitchell??? BROTHERS did however produced 22 episodes before the network gave it the axe. But how in the hell did three-time Emmy Award winning actress CCH Pounder go from her breathtaking electrifying role on The Shield to this piece of dung is beyond me. The other black sitcoms to grace a major television network were on the CW....THE GAME and EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS at one time were the top-rated shows to watch on Monday nights before the network moved them the death slot of Friday nights which kill it.

The Number One black sitcom is House of Payne??? Gimme A Break! And there compare this to The Cosby Show? I can believe this show has been on the air for what 4 seasons now,and it is one of the WORST ever! LaVan Davis is the WEAKEST LINK in that show!!! Don't get me started with that ignorant as hell MEET THE BROWNS,which is more worst off than House of Payne.

reply

I agree with you. I think the problem with black sitcoms started back when UPN began. Then escalated when the WB and UPN combined. Most of The Black shows that are out are the same type of shows. In the 90's it was more variety, better writers, better actors and actresses. Everyone learned from Fox that black sitcoms can equal success.

TBS is now trying to enter the sitcom market. I like Terry Crews but i do not see him carrying a show same for Essence. Essence has always played young roles (people under 25) so it is hard seeing her as a mother (even though she is almost 40). She also doesn't have (what i think) is needed to carry a show (I've seen a little of Half and Half, which was an OK show).

Most of the top Black sitcoms have been canceled even though they had good ratings so i don't know what gives or is going through these executives minds.

yeah I agree don't forget about Kenan and kel! that was a tight show aswell, but yeah that martin, fresh prince, jamie fox and wayne bros were pretty good shows personally the only reason why the current shows aren't good because they aren't funny.. Terry crews is funny but idk if he can carry the show or not since he is the only good thing about the show personally in my eyes I am seeing it because hes in it. TBS should bring in the chapelle show and they would get instant ratings for that.

me i never kissed 'UPN' butt, cause i liked most of there shows.

reply

[deleted]

funny you say that cause, i wish 'upn' had pick up new york undercover & dark angle from fox. and put there spin on it.

reply

[deleted]

thats the hold point, 'the wayan's bros.' = 'the warner bros.' yeah that was 'upn' nickname?

reply

My favorites:

Cosby Show (classic - if you didn't like this show, there's something wrong with you)

Martin (good until some of the later seasons)

In Living Color (how many big stars did this show produce?)

Fresh Prince of BelAir (the only way Will Smith could fail at life is if he tried to fail)

Living Single (was sort of like "Friends" before "Friends was on the air)

Jamie Foxx Show (one of the most talented guys walking the planet)

UPN had the reputation for putting on quality black shows. Some were good and some were pretty awful....

If you think "Homeboys in Outer Space" was bad, then you haven't seen black sitcoms that were so stupid, its no wonder they didn't last no more than two months on the air...like "The Redd Foxx Show","Baby I'm Back",and "New Attitude",not to mention "Grown Ups",and the worst of the worst starred none other than Public Enemy's Flavor Flav that became one of the worst sitcoms ever, lasting a season and a half....

But what kills me is that UPN let one of the most ghettoist shows "The Parkers"
which was so ignorant within itself, lasts six seasons on the air is beyond me.
Wonder how Mo'Nique got successful? What an episode of "The Parkers" some time and find out how trashy this show was.

reply

@raysond: the parkers only ran for 5 seasons, and that 5th season only had 18 episodes. so upn knew what they was doing?

reply

I don't get it either. The fact that the people that are making these shows like HoP, MtP, AWTY, grew up watching these great black sitcoms yet all they can come up is with these stuff (not that many whites shows are doing any better). I love Terry Crews in EHC and his axe commercials. I've watch Essence since she was one of Vanessa's friend on the Cosbys, on Smart Guy and loved her in Half & Half. They have Telma Hopkins from Family Matters and Half & Hlaf, and even Keesha Sharp from Girlfriends. You have all this great talent and its wasted on this show. I only caught the last 10 mins of maybe the 1st or 2nd episode but within seconds I was already tired of the laugh track. I don't expect every show to come out to be great but we haven't had a good black sitcom since what...EBHC?? And I'm sorry but could TBS get off of Tyler Perry's d*ck, yes I'm glad he made it to where he is but its just getting sad now. I think another point is with shows like The Cosby, Family Matters, Fresh Prince it was so focus on them being black. I think these TBS shows are trying go for one demographic obviously black but how many blacks watch this, I don't and maybe the younger crowd (under 20) does because I'm 25 and I find this stuff garbage. Anyways I've bit*hed enough, I hope someone changes the cookie cutter black/white show. Why hasn't there been a show where there were just as many blacks and whites on the show together. If its a white show they have what 1 black, hispanic, asian(when's the last time you saw an asian?!). And on a black show its always one 'token' white person. Cosby had all colors.

well guess what? mr. steve urkel himself did an interview for "TV.COM", he said that the guy who made the show. said "ABC" wouldn't have took the show if, he told them what it really was about. a guy who is a buffoon but acts like an overly exaggerated "NERD".

Yes you're right, shows do have a laugh track, BUT it's usually played when something is actually funny and it's pretty well timed, for me, on this show, the timing is off and the laugh tracks seem out of sync with how funny its supposed to be!

reply

I'm watching the first episode of this show now and it hasn't been bad at all. But, as I stated before. These kinds of shows are held to a different standard than shows like those.

P.S. They should really kill the laugh track though. It's not needed.

Personally for me I believe Crews is not the best actor and is more suited for certain roles that includes the character he played on "Everybody Hates Chris" which he did brilliantly. In the role he is currently playing on this series it really exposes his limited acting ability because he has very little versatility. That's one flaw with the series another is what everyone has mentioned, the chemistry and he looks so much older then her! Atkins and Crews look more like father and daughter when standing together, they have absolutely no romantic chemistry. It's also a bit confusing seeing him call Hopkins his mom when they look like they can be the same age (although I am aware she's 20 years his senior).

Most series from the good days starred actual successful and hysterically funny comedians, Jamie Foxx, Martin, The Cosby Show, The Parker's, The Jefferson's, Good Times (Jimmie Walker was a stand up comic) the list goes on. Many of these series were being co-written by them as well. The new shows on TBS must not see that in order for a show to be funny you can't use writers with very little experience (which is what I see from their credits) and actors that are not actual comedians or have very little comedic appeal. Crews was funny in EHC because he played a role that relatable and funny without trying to hard but this character is just to suburban and incredibly annoying.

Also can someone tell me why the fake audience keeps clapping whenever Ice Cube walks through the door? I can't bring myself to watch more then two episodes so idk if they stopped it but having the clap track for when he walks in and there is none for the main cast makes him seem very narcissistic. I'm positive he ordered it to be done.

Terry Crews is only 3-4 years older than Essence Adkins is. Theres really no problem with the age between them at all regardless of how much older Crews looks.

I believe shows like Meet the Browns and Are we There Yet are the next generation of black sitcoms. With every generation, people are often going to hate the following generation of comedy. People who may have grown up with Good Times or the Jeffersons may have not taken well to A Different World or Fresh Prince. I grew up with Martin, Moesha, and Jamie Foxx show and I can't stand the over the top silliness of a show like House of Payne.

Are We There Yet is a funny show and it's just the next level of black sitcoms.
In 20 years People will be saying what happen to great shows like Meet the Browns and Are we There yet.

I kinda disagree with this comment. I refuse to think that Meet the Browns and Are We There Yet? is the next generation of black sitcoms. If so, Black TV is going to hell (hmp, like it already hasn't). And I'll tell you why. I think generation changes have something "slightly" to do with it. But I'm only 22 and I love all those shows from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. And Yes, because of the change of times elements of the shows change, but all in all they still had GOOD writing and they were actually naturally FUNNY! They still had good writers and everything. So are you trying to say that as each generation goes on the writing will get worse and the shows are gonna be all around crap??? Cuz that's what it sounds, like. I refuse to accept that. Shoot this show makes me wanna write my own series!!!

YES!!!! Stupid clap track...I'm like for what??? And the clap is so rushed and junk. That is seriously egotistical. Everytime he come in the room clapping noises. Last night he didn't even make an entrance in the opening scene (he was already in the opening scene when the show started) and they still clapping for him. I'm like what the???

You have hit the nail on the head - Move to the top of the class - LOL! That is exactly what I came on here to say. Most of the comedies from back in the day were funnier because they were headlined by actual comedians - and some were based on their stand up routine...HELLO. Thats why there is such a difference.
