I Don't Like the Wife's Character

She is always screaming at him, talking down to him, wanting to have her own way. She is unreasonable and I don't think its a good image to potray. Its like he doesn't have a say about anything. Not a good look. I'll give them some time to get it together but I am not gonna watch a black woman speak down to her husband and not support him (even when she is wrong).

Did she ever admit to the $15,000 tax thing.....and the husband talking about he was gonna change his name. Please!

Not so much of the wife but I don't like the actress playing the wife, I don't think that was meant for her personally.. I think the wife friend who played in everybody hates chris next door neihbor should of got the wife part..

reply

I agree...The lady who was in Everyone Hates Chris is in the show now every now and again, and yes, they had chemistry!

Live life strong. Fight the bad.

why is it a black thing and please don't talk about supposed racial stereotypes.....when in fact its a gender "stereotype" that married women are nags .
Its a black thing because black women are forever getting tagged as being loud and argumentative and bossy. It's a black thing because it's a black sitcom and I am black and its not something that I beleive is the case or should be the case. If white women scream at their men in white sitcoms it does not matter to me.

Although in Everybody Loves Raymond Deborah screams at Ray alot once you follow the show you know why.....as a husband he is annoying. In King of Queens Carrie fusses out Doug a lot too. But again he does some really annoying stuff. In this sitcom....unless he is doing something annoying or silly I don't see why she is screaming at him. It wasn't like that in the movie. Even in Everybody Hates Chris, the mother was bossy and it worked for that because it was a well known fact Chris' mother was the same way plus the show and character dynamic was set up like that through Chris' narration. Now that I've said it..... maybe thats what Esssence is doing...... trying to recreate the chemistry of Terry and Tichina from EHC.....well she needs to stop.

Noticed she cooled out and was kissing his butt, and then explained herself later about $15,000 student loan.
I stopped watching so I didn't see how it ended thats why I was asking if she apologized because she needed to and she needed to be real humble about it to.

I really don't know why anyone is trying to find anything negative about this. At least they dealt with a current issue of credit and why, imo married people have screwed up credit after marriage.

Yes they do have screwed up credit that has nothing to do with my point...I am not talking about the one issue, I am talking about in both issues she kept snapping at him. In the movie they had been together longer than 6 months because in the second installment Nia's character had a baby so it had to be about a year or more they were together.

Speaking of which - is there a baby in this sitcom

ok, so then it's not a black problem, it's black people being too concerned about what other people think of us.
Sometimes you just have to say fvck you and fvck them.
I think Ice Cube pretty much thought that.
It has nothing to do with what other people think of us because I hightly doubt that very many white/asian people will watch this show. Not to say that none will but not that many that I am concerned with what they think. It has to do with what we are projecting to OURSELVES based on stereotypes - our young girls see this and listen to the music and watch other things and get a distorted view of who we are.

I think it has less to do with Ice Cube and more to do with the way the actress or director is interpreting the role or the lines.

I was thinking its the actress' interpretation because Nia Long did not play the role that way at all and she is the originator of the role.

Let's put it like this - the show isn't that funny so then you are watching it for the "drama" or the "issue" of whatever they are dealing with. If it were the opposite (let's take colour out of the equation) I wouldn't want to watch a man talk to his wife the way she talks to him especially since her demeanor is not funny just bitchy.

i watch a sitcom because they are typically comedy. i don't look for drama on a comedy or for it to get into issues.
That is why you SHOULD watch a sitcom...which is exactly my point. Like I said previously though - this show isn't that FUNNY (to me) so you have to then watch it for drama or an issue. The way she relates to him is not funny so why is she doing it.

I totally agree. People always talk about what other races do, etc. Personally, I don't care what other shows representing different races do or what they think about us, but when it comes to our representation there is always an imbalance. It is very different for us and a segment of the Black population is fed up with our portrayals at times. It's getting old. Being "strong" has nothing to do with the way this character is behaving.

I'm black and on a whole it seems blacks don't know what they want.
I'll tell you what I want....if its a comedy I want whatever you do to be funny. You don't need to prove anything just be funny! and if you want to prove a point then you can ONCE YOU ARE FUNNY. You can be strong, you can be a bitch, you can be a ditz and you can date who you want. But BE FUNNY doing it. If someone responds to someone else - there response should be funny based on what the person said/did. If its a drama then deal with issues, etc. And if you are going to merge the two (comedy and drama) then you better be very clever! That is what I want - funny comedies. Can't speak for anyone else.

If you were cracking up laughing at this show then you are very easy to amuse.

and again I compare this to what others call the least funny or worst show every by Tyler Perry. I might not laugh much at his sitcoms but i like the show.

Like I said before Tyler Perry's shows are not a good marker to compare anything to.

I know I'm reading these comments late, but did this argument, I mean disagreement all stem from one episode that the poster didn't even bother to finish watching? And if remember the summer episodes correctly, when did Suzanne "scream" at her husband?

cut the crap, what are you talking about? Of all the maried woman she is screaming the less, although i think there are just married for a few years, because crews is not their real father.
Eitherway she is pretty nice to the guy, you've ever seen elr? Debra screams about half an episode. Would you rather see her doing everything he wants, o boy tbs would get a lot of complains if they would air the show like that,

I watched the first season and part of the second and one of the things that I dislike about the show is the wife character.

I don't know why they made her such a horrible person who is generally mean to her husband and treats her kids with distain.

reply

oh well

I agree. The wife is my least favorite character. The character comes out too angry and with too much attitude. The actress needs to bring more comedy to the role. I love the wife's assistant.

I liked Half and Half. She was better on that show, but not great. Again, she played my least favorite character. I also wish they would change her hair/wig.
