Good Movie-Bad Songs

I enjoyed the film, but I thought all the musical productions brought the movie down a few pegs. It would have been a much more enjoyable flick, had it NOT been a musical. It didn't HAVE to be a musical, why make it one?
In my humble blah blah blah...

I agree. I thought it was strange that there was really no indication that it was a musical for the first half, then suddenly some goofy musical numbers out of nowhere in the second half. I also found it much more depressing through out more so than the usual family film. Strange movie.

I sorta see what you mean...but to be honest, I did like the songs. The opening one was cute although forgettable. However, the "I Believe in Christmas" one sung by the orphan girls has actually been stuck in my head all weekend, and Quinn's "Who Will Sing My Song" or whatever it may have been called was totally beautiful...I really liked those!
Guess they felt it appropriate for the characters to express themselves through song for a few minutes here and there, and while it felt a tad out of place at first, I then accepted and enjoyed it.

Of course, Disney needs to make musicals to promote their new crop of young singers. This is a new way to launch the singing careers.

Yeesh...I for one would like them to return to the old-fashioned, Walt-era style of musicals...casting ideal, talented actors in memorable roles, with quality songs and stories. All of this hype about these modern Disney Channel stars, none of whom hold any charm or appeal for me, just dismays me.

I pretty well agree with rlslemmer; this movie's songs WERE charming and nicely done, though far from exquisite. They may have been a bit off at times. It wasn't a masterpiece of a film, but in my opinion, it was several steps above much of the stuff that's being shamefully branded with the Disney name today. I'd certainly rather watch this than the Disney Channel in its current state...:*{

I like you, Um. I like largeness...

I liked the songs, too. Thought they were totally cute, though not well done. You could tell that the film did not match the soundtrack. They did add some pleasant emotion to the film, which for me overcame the hokeyness of the performances.

Half the movie was an Annie ripoff, down to casting a couple of similar looking orphans and having one say "oh my goodness "

Annie was a musical, so this is too.
