Disturbing

I didn't go into this movie looking for things to criticize, and I swear I'm not going out of my way to read in anything sinister, but the first kid's song creeped me out. Do we really need to hear some kid under ten singing about who's going to kiss her in bed/hold her through the night? Even giving the movie every possible benefit of the doubt, that song nauseated me.

I realize it wasn't intended to mean anything nasty, but I can't help my visceral reaction.

Quinn's song (from the balcony) seemed really out of place. She wasn't at an age where she'd be that articulate or grasp her situation like that. I could see the older kids singing some kind of song, but not a solo like that. I didn't notice the words you mentioned though, maybe because I was still so jarred by how out of place the song was at that point.

On the topic of disturbing, the part when Paws was a stuffed animal and on the conveyor in the incinerator was quite disturbing. It was almost like they had a real live dog in it, since the stuffed animal was more than just a stuffed animal at that point. And then they had Quinn crawling in while it was still on and the flames on the other end. I couldn't help think of kids watching and thinking that maybe it's not such a bad idea to crawl into a running incinerator to save a stuffed animal.

Totally agree there. That did kinda bother me, even though it was obvious that he was going to be rescued.

And while I tend to think that I'd be likely to climb inside a burning incinerator to save one of MY stuffies, I hope that most kids wouldn't get the idea from this that it's a great thing to do--if only because they understand the dog's real identity in the movie...

I think what's disturbing is that you would even have those kinds of thoughts in your mind. It was clearly a child missing the love ONLY a parent could give.

I totally agree, I mean unless you're a total perv, you're not gonna hear a kid talking about being held and think OMG she's talking DIRTY!

I thought it had a very "Orphan Annie" feel to it. All of the orphanage scenes did.

I was brought up Catholic. So sue me.

I also thought it had an Orphan Annie feel. I felt Quinn's songs was like the "Maybe" song in "Annie".
