Would it really have a made a difference....

If he told even just one person...his mom, friend, etc? By the time they would realize that he probably is in trouble somehow, and then get a rescue team out to start searching...it probably would have been at least by the point when he cut his arm off or later.

While I cant remember the name of the canyon he went to that is where he set out to go. If you knew they were going there and don't hear from someone after a day or 2 you would start to worry. If my son was an avid hiker and he said im going here by myself and then I don't hear from him the day after. And I would have called to check up. I would get worried. At the very least I would know where he should be and a perimeter could at least be set up based on where he should be.

It might, but then again it might not. Canyonlands State Park is huge, and it is possible they might not be able to find him.

If he told someone what he was planning to do, like the specific trails he would be on, or sites he would visit, then it could have made a difference, maybe.

reply

I may very well be wrong. But I think where he got caught was a specific place where he planed on going. Wasn't that the place they rounded up horses to collect. Something along those lines. Like I said I could be wrong tho.

The idea is not just to tell them where you're going, but when you're expected to be back and when you do get back to confirm with them that you are back. So you tell mom "I'm going to Blue John, should be back on Sunday by midnight." Then when mom doesn't hear from him Monday morning, she can call the police and say "My son is missing in the Blue John Canyon."

"I'm not A1nut because I'm normal...."

It could have made the difference. Better than not telling anyone at all. At least telling someone would give him a better chance than not. If he got specific of the location he intended to go, perhaps mentioning Blue John Canyon, he would have been found faster. If they found the girls and asked them where he headed off they might have had a much faster response time but even so, that arm was practically dead likely by 24 hours without blood supply, completely dead by 36 hours.

Probably yes... basic safety 101 when going hiking in every mountain is tell at least someone you are going out, where are you going and when are you planning to be back. They tell you this ad nauseum. Thus I don't get all this hype about the movie - so someone acted highly irresponsible and had to cut off his arm, oh spare me...

reply

It's more about the fact that he still somehow got up enough courag and concentration to accuratetly amputate his own arm.

reply

The point is not so much whether it would have made a difference, but what he was thinking about and regretting while stuck there. You can bet that in his mind he thought about that a lot when pinned to a rock.
