No cell phone?
He takes a camera but no cell phone? I hardly carry a phone myself but no way will I go to a place like this without a phone even if I think there will be poor reception.
shareKeep in mind the actual event took place in 2003, a time when cell phones weren't nearly as common as they are today. Not to mention, like you said, it's probably pretty hard to get a good signal at the bottom of a canyon.

shareI don't know, even in the midwest everyone I knew got a cell phone sometimes between 2000-2003. I remember almost all of my classmates had a Nokia 3210. I had to buy my own unlike my friends and didn't get one until 2002, a Kyocera. It wasn't nearly as dark ages as people seem to remember. We could even text! Now 1993? Yeah, no one had one except the lucky few with giant ones like Zach Morris and Mulder & Scully.
