Hugh Jackman?
This is one of my favourite books, and Hugh Jackman one of my favourite actors, but...
Why is he in the film? There is not a single white/foreign character in the book. I hope they haven't messed with the story too much.

Apparently there are two parallel stories in the movie - the past (characters in the book) and the present (which has the descendants of Snow Flower and Lily). Hugh is in the present portion of the movie.
shareI have seen an advanced screening of this film, and Hugh Jackman reprised his role of Wolverine for this film. He is only featured in one scene whereby he is engaged in a fight that takes place in the SimJung Palace. His character is beheaded by the spirit of Flowers' Great Grandmother. She then hollows out his skull and uses it to serve dinner to WangJin the stray dog that is taken in by Flower after she witnesses it get run over by a rikshaw driven by an obviously intoxicated unkown boy. The scene outros with a Snow Monkey dragging Jackman's headless body off screen with the song "I want it that way", by the Backstreet Boys being played by Lily on a Sanxian aka a lute, who is barely visible out a window of the palace.

When Hugh Jackman was on Leno several months back he talked about being a club owner/performer in the film. From what I remember, he even said that he had to learn to sing in Chinese for the part. I have never read (or even heard of) the book, so I do not know if this character is an add-on or an original character.
shareIt's an original character. The book focuses solely on the relationship of the two girls. The movie from what I understand is told from the perspective of two of their descendants in modern times so that's where Hugh's character fits in.
shareI saw the film last night and Hugh has a very small part as a nightclub owner singer who has a relationship with one of the girls. He does sing in Chinese, too. He is in about 10 min of the film and plays an Aussie.
shareJUST Saw the film...WAY Underused for the part. He really brings his presence to the role when you see him. Too bad it was 25 minutes altogether. YOU ROCK HUGH.
sharewho cares? he's hot and he sings in this! in english and mandarin!
Wolverine: Hey hey, it's me.
Cyclops: Prove it.
Wolverine: You're a dick.
Cyclops: Ok.
