Hmm...maybe because as important as that time was, seeing a movie about the disgusting torture of a people does not appeal to a general audience. Also, the Chinese have been involved in much more as one of the first civilizations in the world, than the Nanjing Massacre. Finally, if you want to talk about massacres and evil done to people of different nationalities, you'd have to make a movie for every single culture in this world, and that INCLUDES "white people", even Americans.
Personally, I thought there was a chance to do something great with this movie. I didn't think the book was that amazing but the historical aspect could have been something to see. This missed so much of the heart in this movie. Instead of having some modern parallel, they should have used the screentime to further develop the historical characters.
