White people and Orientalist world view

White people love 19th century China. It is so exotic. When an modern Asian movie comes out, they would remake it and starring only white people.

These movies are tired and played out. More foot bidding, and oppressive Chinese society, more white knight syndrome.

No one is going to watch this *beep*

What's wrong with foot binding?

It was a real part of Chinese culture and it's very interesting, if you ask me.

Yes, we sure do love the sexy Chinese patriarchy of the time and just adore foot-binding. What *beep*.

Also, what "white knight syndrome"? There is only one white person in this entire movie and he isn't even that important.

Manuscripts don't burn.

...specifically, Nanjing massacre. Why isn't this subject touched upon, but instead we keep getting 'backward' chinese movies.

reply

Hmm...maybe because as important as that time was, seeing a movie about the disgusting torture of a people does not appeal to a general audience. Also, the Chinese have been involved in much more as one of the first civilizations in the world, than the Nanjing Massacre. Finally, if you want to talk about massacres and evil done to people of different nationalities, you'd have to make a movie for every single culture in this world, and that INCLUDES "white people", even Americans.

Personally, I thought there was a chance to do something great with this movie. I didn't think the book was that amazing but the historical aspect could have been something to see. This missed so much of the heart in this movie. Instead of having some modern parallel, they should have used the screentime to further develop the historical characters.

I know that this was written a while ago but I'm just gonna write anyway. I don't know how true your view is. I generally go out of mine away to watch foreign language movies in theaters if I can. Lately I have been watching a lot of Korean Dramas online from hulu.com and other reputable sources. It would seem that Korean dramas are popular, so I can only conclude that Chinese move and tv show could do well if they are made available.

Eh, the Korean dramas are partly more popular because they're actually better. There's not a lot of Chinese TV dramas I could recommend in good conscience.
