Why did Snow Flower's son die? It couldn't have been THAT cold.

What do you want me to do, dress in drag and do the hula?

It was snowing, they fell asleep outside, and he froze to death. I don't think the movie spent that much time explaining things - it tried to fit A LOT in.

Babies (just like the elderly) lose heat to the surrounding air much faster than older children and adults. Babies generally don't have enough insulation tissue to counteract heat loss. Plus, and most important, babies cannot shiver spontaneously to increase heat production for themselves.

Spending a night in temperatures cold enough to produce that falling snow (even though it was gentle) would most definitely prove lethal to a baby.

In the book, the refugee chapters took a long time. The movie just glossed over the entire affair, but in the book, they were out there for many many weeks (even months, I think), and the refugees were all starving and cold. The baby died of the cold, but also malnutrition or maybe pneumonia if I remember correctly. Actually, (It's been a long time, since I read the book) I think they were out there all winter and Lily didn't get home until spring.

You are evil, and must be destroyed. - Honey, Mother Nature is taking care of that faster than you.
