Women????

It's a wonderful movie, I truly enjoyed it. Incredible for the budget, and a fascinating experience. I also loved that (as the main character said) so many mysteries might be left unanswered.

But... could there have been at least ONE woman with a role more important than a brief sex-symbol astronaut flashback, and preferably not only a stereotypical 'woman' role??? Couldn't ONE of the 'interviews' have been a woman? Couldn't the transmitted message have been the mother of the nephew, rather than the father? The voice of Mission Control? The late-night TV interviewer?

I'm not calling the movie misogynistic, but if the movie is about the central role of connection to human existence, and a movie that uses the alien 'scrapbook' ship as an archive of the human experience to suggest that metaphor, then something more balanced would have been appropriate. Women play a larger role in humanity than just the male fantasy sex symbols shown here.

You're totally right. The most significant/noticeable woman's part of the movie was the 15 seconds where all of the sudden it was just like "Oh, hi penis", and then back to the movie. They could have put in something with the exact same effect without being so gratuitous.

And that scene directly followed the interview that appeared to be about the soldier's loss of his wife and child which was very touching, but totally overridden by the scene just after it.

Spot on.
