Howard Stern was right on regarding Precious actress

PCers need not read this post.

I had to look away every time she was shown during the Oscar telecast. Look up morbidly obese in the dictionary and you'll see a photo of Precious. HD really brought out the stretch marks on her body. Like Joan Rivers said--her dress looked like the screen Avatar was shot against. Is there anyone in Hollywood who has the guts to tell this actress to drive by any and all McDonalds and Burger Kings in the future? She'll be dead by the 4th of July at this rate.

I know its soooo wrong on so many levels, but I cannot help but agree with the OP.
I was watching the red carpet show with my mom and I couldn't help but cringe whenever I saw her being interviewed. No one, I repeat, NO ONE should ever allow themselves to get that big and for any of those people to condone her size and even APPLAUD her confidence is a damn shame.

And its not even like, OMG, how dare she not be a size 6! Its like OMG, how on earth can anyone promote such unhealthiness? Gabby is not a "big girl", not "thick", not you're generic "fat" or even "overweight", she is MORBIDLY OBESE. Meaning her actual life is at stake for being as large as she is, meaning any sane physician would suggest immediate gastric bypass and/or any other surgeries to combat obesity for her.

I understand she was playing the role of a morbidly obese young girl and as a result her size and appearance were fitting, but HONESTLY in the long run she could never make it in Hollywood. Producers and execs would probably view her as a liability for being sooo grotesquely overweight. Can you imagine the amount of health problems she is probably struggling with even now at her young age?

Mo'nique herself recently lost weight at the concern of her husband, and even when she was bigger she still wasn't as huge as Gab, I don't see why she can't offer the same advice to her.

I must be late to the game, because I didn't hear that Howard Stern commented on her. What did he say?

dog - noun: amicus fidelis protectio fortis "faithful friend, strong protector".

Here's a short excerpt from the radio segment, found it from a blog:

There’s the most enormous, fat black chick I’ve ever seen. She is enormous. You feel bad because everyone’s pretending she’s a part of show business and she’s never going to be in another movie,” Stern said. “She really should have gotten the Best Actress award because she’s never going to have another shot. What movie is she gonna be in?”

“‘Blind Side 2,’” Stern suggested. “She could be the football player, take out the whole front line.”

“It’s so sad you want to say to her, listen honey, you got a little money in the bank, go get yourself thin. You’re gonna die. And now she’s famous and she’ll never get another acting job”

Stern, on the air with his co-host Robin Quivers, also played the speech given by Oprah Winfrey to Sidibe at the Oscars on the program. The hosts said Oprah was lying to her by saying she’s going to have a career in Hollywood.”Come on, be honest with the girl,” Stern said. “Look in that room. Who else do you look like? Those are the people that work all the time,” Quivers agreed."

Sad to say that for once in my life I agree with Howard Stern. I know how mean and terrible this sounds but she will not go far staying that size. I mean look around you sweetheart the whole "I'm fat and proud of it" trend is over. You can be a few pounds overweight like most Americans but if you're an actress and a young actress at that, if you want a career you need to loose about 100 pounds. I know it's great to have great self esteem but I bet even Oprah must be thinking "Loose the weight girl, you're going to have a heart attack by 30". Please gabby dear Gabby, be the next face of Jenny Craig would ya?

reply

To be perfectly honest, I think it best that people stop referring to her as "fat" or a "big girl". I can't tell you how many people I've seen come to her defense on different sites claiming that its okay to be "big" and that there are a lot of "fat" actresses that are successful in Hollywood. One person even tried to compare her to America Ferrera (WTF?), saying that no one makes a big deal out of her size and how she is able to get jobs in Hollywood. For one SHE IS NOT MORBIDLY OBESE and that's a huge insult to even try to insinuate she is in the same weight range as Gabby. Someone of America's size can lead a normal, healthy life for the most part, Gabby not so much.

In a way I'm kind of shocked, if not semi-disgusted, that many people actually defend Gabbys size and even go so far as to claim that she's "not that bad" or that they have "seen worse". Most likely if you have seen worse it was on a special episode or Maury, Montel or any other talk show where the person was so morbidly obese they were confined to their house, and that's saying something! Has this truely become the norm for most Americans now? That we are no longer able to recognize true health hazards such as morbid obesity? Come oooon.

reply

Big difference? Gabby is talented, America Ferrera isn't.

In the end, I care about who is the better actress, not who is better looking.

And I honestly don't care about her weight, it's her choice and her problem. All I care about is how well she can act, and she can.

reply

Bah. I'm not challenging the fact that she's TALENTED, I'm talking about the fact that people are trying to defend her size by comparing her to someone who while not the smallest, is also not morbidly obese.

I saw Precious too and I will say that Gabby IS very talented, but I will also not sugarcoat things and pretend as if her SIZE does not matter. No one is bringing up actual looks, Gabby has a very attractive face, but to completely ignore her weight issues and pretend as those it doesn't matter is ridiculous. Understand, she will have a very hard time making it Hollywood being her size and if she does appear in movies she will get typecast like crazy.

Yes, Stern was being incredibly blunt if not rude, but I hate to say that his overall statement was correct. People really need to stop encouraging unhealthy lifestyles such as hers, Gabby has a disease, an EATING DISORDER. Its a shame so many people are overlooking that for the sake of her ability to "act", lets see how far that gets her when she's developed heart issues or diabetes as a result of her weight.

reply

Well problem is, it cuts both ways. When an actress is anorexic, it's horribly unhealthy too. Both are horrible extremes.

So I ignore both and defend neither.

reply

... and you would still call yourself a fan?
Trust, if this were the case of a very obviously anorexic actress, whose weight was being defended and even applauded in some cases, I would be voicing my concern as well. If ever I see an actor or actress that I admire appearing sickly or taking on an unhealthy lifestyle I have a hard time ignoring it. But maybe that's just me.

reply

Eh. I'm a fan of the art, not the artist. And I don't recall ever calling myself a fan, I just said she was incredibly talented, not that I cared about her health issues. If she wants to improve them, she can, but if not, I don't care as long as she continues to act, or if she does act she does well. Her personal life is not my concern really.

reply

I didn't say that you did I merely asked if you would call yourself a fan of someone whose actual condition you didn't care about. To each his own though.

reply

man theres a lot of fat people in america. and its the oscar party, not the nazi party. you got ugly ass character actors, but if they got ugly asses, they cant act? wheres the realism in that.

i know what i want to say but ...

That's where I (and a lot of people) will disagree. These people are in denial so money doesn't help. It's somewhat discriminatory to think that obesity is due to poverty (although the correlation between these two is quite high).

reply

Big difference? Gabby is talented, America Ferrera isn't.

Perhaps she is talented, but there are just only so many roles for morbidly obese black girls. Fried chicken restaurants won't use someone like her anymore. She needs to lose weight to survive - physically and to even have a career in Hollywood.

Haha...what a bunch of holier than thou hypocrites!

So she's fat...guess what? You ALL are!

I work in health care and the statistics are not kind to Americans: the majority of Americans are overweight. Maybe not to the level that Gabby is, but MOST Americans have more fat than they should have. MOST Americans need to exercise and slim down.

And you all are here badmouthing some chick you've never met for doing what most of you probably do too: eat fast food and don't exercise.

Considering 2/3rds of Americans are overweight I would say a good number of you posting here are in that category which makes all this even more hilarious.

Being grossly overweight is the result of food addiction, the type of food offered in a given society and sedentary lifestyle. Gabby did this to herself but c'me on...it's not like she didn't have any help. She should be seen with pity and compassion not mockery and scorn like some of you closet fatties are doing.

I hope none of you ever have an obese child or work with addiction patients. What a nightmare.

Get over it. Howard Stern is a PRICK. Gabby did absolutely nothing to deserve such rude comments to be made about her. Yes, it is obvious she has a weight problem, but so do alot of people. Besides, she is smaller than she was in Precious, I think she's in the process of slimming down. Just leave her be. It's her life and she has talent.

It would be nice to not be judged by how much you weigh

Well the thing is, I don't think anyone around here mocks Gabi. What ticks us off to the extreme is the whole "i'm fat, I'm proud, get used to it" attitude. Not only is it stupid, it is also dangerous because it sets a bad example for young people. When you see on TV people say "most Americans are fat so it's normal", it's disgusting. This argument was even made on Drop dead diva. I mean, c'mon. I can be compassionate and even help someone lose weight if they admit their problem. But being proud of being a sloth, that's inacceptable.

I know I'm a bit late to the thread, but my question is, why does Howard Stern give a damn? He doesn't know this woman, so obviously he doesn't care about her well-being one way or the other. No, she's just fodder for his radio show. She's a punchline to him and nothing more. I am actually surprised that Robin just sat there and grinned while he hurled his insults. But more to the point, does anyone on this thread really care about what happens to Gabby? I don't think so.

And I'm laughing at Joan Rivers, not with her. The fact that she can make jokes about ANYONE'S appearance when her face is stretched so far back that it looks like her skull is trying to escape is just hysterical to me. Talk about issues. In fact, you could hardly call it a face at all, seeing how it is made up of more plastic than skin. Her "face" looks like a Halloween mask. So, instead of this dressed-up old saddlebag going in for one of her routine tightenings, she should perhaps check in with a shrink. I have noticed that if anyone insults her daughter, she chews them a new ass hole. Well, Gabby is someone's daughter too.

But the people on this thread are disingenuous with their "concern" for her health. It's not about that. It seems to be more about what's pleasing to their eyes.

Sister, when I've raised hell, you'll know it!
