Where the hell were the real Hollywood Icons? I am 28, not exactly a fan of Twilight or Hannah Montana... so watching 3 hours of the new film stars, that got their spotlight by being pretty or because they sing, was just boring. Not that I have a personal grudge against them, but c'mom!!!! Where were Jack Nicholson and Robert Redford? Who is the next generation of today's icons? I would say Ed Norton, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ryan Gosling -Obviously times have change and we won't have two Robert DeNiros but these guys have talent, and a resume!!! What does Zach Effron have? A new nose!! Seriously, Lauren Bacall did not have the chance to walk on stage!!! That lady was just one of film noir biggest stars, worked with some of the best and legendary directors and actors, taught all of us how to whistle, and she doesnt get the chance to have her moment... But it was worth it, considering I got to see Kristin Stewart clearing her throat.
There were a few great stars present : Meryl, George, Jeff, James Cameron...
But cme on... No Clint? No Jack? No Harrison? No Steven Spielberg or Marty Scorsese to hand out the Best Director Award? They had to content with Barbra Streisand?!!! No Pacino, no DeNiro... Not even a Tom Cruise for Christ's sake? There was a global lack of true icons at this year's ceremony.
And no, Taylor Lautner, this charisma-vacuum will NEVER become an icon. WORST ACTOR EVER. I just don't get his success. It's the Academy Awards, not the MTV Movie Awards!
Thank God for Ben Stiller, Robert Downey, Jr. or Steve Carell but... a few years ago we had Will Ferrell, Jack Black and John C. Reilly singing a wonderfully funny number. This year? Yeah, they had Tyler Perry... Next year, Martin Lawrence? Tom Arnold? David Hasselhoff?
Also I don't understand what happened with the Honorary Oscars. It was a wonderful tradition of the Academy and usually one of the moments I was excited about. And certainly Lauren Bacall and Roger Corman deserved more : they should have had a real homage and I would have loved to see them on stage. Some of the most memorable moments in Oscar history happened with the Honorary Awards : who could forget Charles Chaplin or Groucho Marx collecting their statues?
Thank God then for classy winners like Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock (classy speech! - not necessarily the best actress around but she was great!), Kathryn Bigelow (her success is so well deserved, she's been a wonderful director since Near Dark)... At least this year some VERY good films were nominated and the winner is a masterpiece. This year, no Chocolat or Chicago...
On the good side, the tribute to John Hughes was very moving and actually made me want to see some of his movies again.
But really, what happened? 2009's edition was so good... Remember Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman singing? That was magical, enchanting. This year it seems they didn't have time for that kind of moments. Everything seemed rushed. If you don't let Lauren Bacall or Roger Corman talk, why even bother? As someone else said in another post : Bacall did not get to talk but hey, we got to hear Kristen Stewart clear her throat...
I just find it funny on what they call talent these days. I'm a movie fan and have been for a good long while but c'mon now. Taylor Lautner? Kristen Stewart? Miley Cyrus? Are you kidding me? These clowns couldn't act their way out of a wet paper bag. I thought the Academy Awards was supposed to be a night when the Hollywood stars shined. Like the prior poster said - No Eastwood or Redford or Pacino or DeNiro. No Scorsese or Spielberg. Geeze! Didn't quite seem the same. Lauren Bacall basically being shoved aside. Oh we gave her an award. Stand up, bow and sit please Lauren. C'mon. Where is the respect at for her? Lost some respect for the Academy Awards after that. They'll do that to her and Corman but we still get that big ass dance number that meant absolutely nothing.
Robert Duvall and Mickey Rooney were in the audience. They didn't participate. Tom Hanks gives Best Picture? Why not get someone we haven't seen in a while--Sean Connery, Gene Hackman, Joanne Woodward., or Julie Andrews. That is real star power!
I would have settled for Lauren Bacall's being honored with a tribute onstage instead of acknowledging her and other special winners from the audience.
I think it's a disgrace the way Mickey Rooney and others of his generation (the few that are still alive) are treated...They were from the Golden Age of Hollywood, these so called actors/actresss of today could never walk in their shoes....I'm glad I got to see Tracey, Hepburn,Bogart,Taylor, Robert and Elizabeth, Rogers/Astaire, Colbert, Gable and so many more....These ppl were stars, not the celebrities of today, and that's just what they are celebrities, not actors, simply celebrities and nothing more.
Zac Efron? What has he done besides HSM? Oh, Oscar worthy films such as the horrible remake of Hairspray and another watered down remake of Big called 17 Again.
