Worth the watch; Is on NetFlix Instant

I got turned on (so to speak) to Jessica Brown Findlay from her role as the youngest daughter on Downton Abbey. Didn't notice her much the first year, but the recent second season made her stand out. She has a certain wholesome sexiness, not to mention voice, that's hard to define.

Checking on YouTube, I found Albatross in upcoming projects and hoped I'd be able to find a view someplace. I've been watching RedBox, but it's too "small" for them to compete with Transformers and the life.

I was surprised to find it available on NetFlix streaming and watched it yesterday.

Coming-of-age movies are always difficult not to pigeonhole critically. There seem to be only so many directions one can go with the genre. But Albatross seems to find new ways to illustrate the angst without being predictable or too formulaic.

JBF and Felicity Jones are super in the film. Sebastian is fine. Julia Ormond, whom I've liked since "Young Catherine" was a bit too strident in the role, or directed badly. But overall, supporting acting was fine. There were some big laugh out loud moments and some clear feeling your pain moments.

I would definitely agree with writers who've said that this is a star-making turn for JBF. She makes the film work, brings life to the characters around her, and makes me wish I could spend a day with her character.

My only regret (as an American) was that I had no way to turn on subtitles with streaming NetFlix. And it's a hassle to rewind a lot. I'm sure there are witty things that I missed.

(But I've got a solution. I just found out my county library got a copy of the DVD. I'm 3rd in the queue. Will be watching it again as soon as my name comes up.)

Anyway, I recommend it, if only to see lots more of JBF (seriously, no pun intended) than Downton provided.

Yeah, I found JBF attractive from her voice and panache on Downton. So Albatross was quite a departure in character. Seeing her in interviews, it seems that the "real" JBF is somewhere in between!

I also noticed the setting (Isle of Man) and liked it. My Dad's parents came from extreme western Cornwall in England, on the shore, and I really liked the place. Remembering my visit from a few decades ago, the movie settings reminded me of it. I'd like to go back (from Florida) for another visit.

Let me make sure I understand you....as an American, you need English subtitles to watch a movie filmed in actual English?

I really hope you meant "closed-captioning" for the hearing-impaired rather than subtitles.

If not, I weep for America.

reply

Not a great movie, but Sebastian Koch is hot!

@tritwentyonemom: Yes, Americans often need subtitles for UK movies, as some of your accents are a garbled mess. I would also like to point out that "weap" [sic] is spelled, "weep".

reply

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a perfect example of why so many people from other countries dislike Americans.

I know how to spell "weep", thanks. Have you ever heard of "mistakes"?

People often make them.

Snarky people point them out.
