How do they know Rockwell has the $$$

I get that his black friend double crossed him, but he never told him about the money. Is it just that the friend knew enough information from the other criminals to deduce that the girl was near Rockwell's property? Was it because of the lawyer and the cash he gave him? It seemed like Macy was informed about the situation, but I was unclear about his role in everything. I didn't feel like the explanation near the end really explained anything.

Can someone please connect the dots in this movie for me?

These are mountain people, hunters, so they knew the girl fled to the mountain with the stolen money. The whole movie he referred to the mountain, his dad's land THAT HE LOST TO THE BANK as 'his' property but it's not, so he has a problem with his pride and he is a big delusional. All these people knew each other. The babysitter's porn watching friend did know him and had an eye on his family, see. Cause that wife wasn't going anywhere and if they had to really press, which they didn't wanna do, they would get her AND I THINK HE KNEW THEY WOULD but they never did, they just used the threat and that made him stay BUT all he had to do was give it up BUT he really wanted and he felt NEEDED the money, but remember the job offer? He was suicidal or not very bright it bipolar or 'standing his ground'. This one was really deeper than most know. Seems like somebody gave that wife some cash and she left town, they wanted him to worry but we're using her not hurting her. You have to assume things and I don't think we're making asses of ourselves on this one. It was sad he had to have that showdown with his friend but it's sad how we THINK we walk this life waiting some big payday but if we could just treat each other right we'd be better. The lawyer told him plain and simple, the money that girl took feed a lot of mouths in that town. This was a good movie.

Sorry spell check interrupted and I'm unable to edit. I was sad the friend killed himself after he confronted him about his betrayal.

The money thing can be figured out way easier. Small town where he gives the lawyer the 500 dollar bills sets off a red flag. Than he gives the guy at the diner a 100$ bill for ruining his pants. He spread large bills around a place where nobody has that kind of money (for the most part) . The whole fact that behind rockwells character he is not very smart throughout and in a place where everyone knows everyone he just wasn't an intelligent guy . Granted he got dealt a bad hand for shooting the girl but that was the real beginning of the end for him.
As for his friend, he was a real drunk who couldn't live with himself let alone what he did to betray him. It is sad but look at what his house looked like. He was basically dead already.

He gave the wife cash in the beginning in the folded meat that Obedia grabbed when he walked in .

This is a guy who killed a girl and needed to hide her. He had 600 zillion acres of woods to bury her in, but instead he "hid" her in a garbage bin in an open clearing in broad daylight.
Eventually he was smart enough to hide her in his own freezer and even smarter to bury her in the woods. So why was he so stupid early on?

That's called a "character arc."
