Is Simon total ignorant?

Simon thought Azazel is Gargamel's cat, and never heard of the phrase "Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin".

I come from secular house and never studied the book of Daniel at school, but I heard the story about the mysterious writing that appeard at Belshazzar's feast. Considering that Simon is Jewish, shouldn't he have some knowledge about that phrase, and the meaning of the word "Azazel"?
