I've just re-watched "Prison of Garbage" (2010) for the first time in a long time. One thing that's always stood out in my memory about it still jumped out at me now! Deborah and her adult son, Rob, explain why they have multiple coffeemakers. You see:

Deborah: "I have three coffeepots. Um, it's easier to buy a new coffeepot than it is to clean a really dirty one."

Rob: "The reason we buy new coffeepots is because when they get dirty, they get a lot of maggots in them, and that's NOT something you want to put your lips to."

Okay, got it! Silly me, I've been laboring under the ridiculous notion that if people WASH their coffeepots/coffeemakers after each use, they'd last a good long time. I didn't know you're supposed to buy new ones all the time.

This thread reminded me of the episode with the family who basically walked on a has a rug made out empty 1 liter pepsi bottles, pizza boxes & needles the diabetic mother simply threw on the floor. The teenage daughter cooked in the kitchen next to a soup can filled with living roaches. Why would you have that?? She talked about how you had to stand guard while cooking because roaches would jump in the pan of food being cooked. The teenage son talked about how you had to walk with your food covered and when you did sit down to eat, constantly brush bugs off yourself & the paper plate. The father had left sometime ago because of the filth. This is the house where the show called in exterminators first and they were shocked how infested they house was! The people who kill roaches for a living were shocked a house that infested had inhabitants too! I know classmates of the teens who saw the show to this day must refer to them as the "roach" kids.
