Watching repeat of Seymour now...

Oh.My.God!! How could his daughter and the social worker go in that house w/o their body being covered from head to toe? They're sitting in his "office", and I swear there's a roach sitting on the head of the social worker - she's got very blond hair & it's obvious! I tried to find an update on Seymour - wonder if he's still alive - but can't find one. Does anyone know whatever happened to him? That poor, poor man. And not only was he an M.D. - he had a pharmacy license, too. You couldn't pay me ANY amount of money to set foot in that house.

I'm watching it now and I am with you. I was baffled to find out he used to be an orthopedic surgeon. After hearing what that exterminator said about three roaches walking through their feces and all the bacteria they carry around, it's no wonder Seymour looks so sickly.

This illustrates that even though someone may seem successful, happly and normal, you never know what demons someone is wrestling with.

I just saw this episode for the first time.

I would never leave my parent in a home like that. End of story. Love your parents? You don't go in their house, see how they're living, and walk out.

reply

I totally agree. My mother wasn't a hoarder but when my father died I didn't want her living alone in that neighborhood. When she refused to even think about moving I paid for her to take a trip to the Caribbean for a week. While she was gone I moved her out of the house. She didn't speak to me for six months but I know I did the right thing and have never regretted it.

reply

Totally.

Hoarders have shown that they can't make proper decisions for themselves. I would totally take the power away from my parents and handle things until they're mentally capable of handling it on their own.

reply

This has always fazed me about the families that know the hoarder(s) is living in a house stuffed with stuff, feces, vermin, spoiled food etc and do nothing to move things forward. I don't care how much he or she squawks or hates you do something. If APS needs to be called -call them! If CPS needs to be called -call them! If City Code Enforcement & the Humane Society need to be called- CALL THEM! I don't know how many episodes I've watched that had a family member comment that they felt one day they'd come and the person would be dead because the stuff fell on them or they ate bad food and it killed them. For those with children -shame on all the adults who let it go on. The damage done to them being raised in the homes may never go away even with therapy.

reply

Absolutely.

I get that dealing with these people is exhausting. They're crazy and often treat people horribly.

If my parent was a hoarder, I would try to take care of it without getting outside help. IF I couldn't, I would leave the situation and call the authorities and let them handle it.

I often wonder what is going on in the minds of someone like Seymour. Even his bed was crawling with cockroaches. How could someone lie down in complete filth to sleep?
