Question for Demons Souls players...

First off, please please PLEASE don't knock on me for this question. I've seen a lot of users recieve some really mean blasts from other people when they ask a question about a game/movie they're misunderstanding or whatever.

Ok, so I'm hearing how unforgivingly brutal this game's difficulty is.

My question is probably the most obvious one you may have seen on the forums of various video game sites:

Is this game really THAT hard?

I own a PS3, and I must say (despite certainly admitting that the XBox 360 has many more exclusive titles) I could not be happier that I bought it. The 360 is an excellent system (I feel most PS3 owners are to defensive and should admit that lol), but the PS3 has, for several reasons, continued to blow me away (most recently with Uncharted 2 - an excellent exclusive, by the way).

The reason I bring that up is, Demons Souls is amongst the upcoming releases of several exclusives for the PS3 (I'm SOOO pumped for Heavy Rain, God of War 3, The Last Guardian, and White Knight Chronicles...among others). I certainly don't wanna miss out on Demons Souls being another exclusive, and I honestly am interested in playing it.

So I guess its actually a two-part question, haha.

1) Is this game REALLY that difficult? If so, could you guys put some input on it?

2) Is it a worthy addition to my PS3 game purchases?

Much appreciated.

It's quite difficult when you first start playing, especially if you're the impatient type. After you get used to the mechanics of the game and you realize that you have to take your time, it starts to becomes easier... sort of. If you're the type of person who doesn't like to die then you should probably avoid this one. I would say it's a worthy game to purchase, it's by far my favourite game for the PS3 (that I've played).

Yes, supplies are scarce, and as previously mentioned, it requires a lot of patience. You have to remember what's coming next and the best ways to deal with each encounter. You will forget, and you will die again and again. You will want to use the feature that lets you request help from other players on the PlayStation Network.

You have virtually unlimited options in terms of what order you choose to play through the game, but the game makes things available to you almost without regard of difficulty level. It doesn't hold your hand like most games and make sure that you survive and power-up.

Even if you're so awesome at it that you play through most of it without dying, there is a specially set up feature that allows another player of any skill level on PSN to invade your world and attack you, and thereby possibly steal the souls you've collected. That can happen at any time.

It is hard, but it is totally awesome.

Level restrictions prevent a player from entering your game, or indeed you from entering another players game, if one players skill level is grossly over/under the others. These are set at 10% of your current skill level + 10, meaning that if you were a level 150 character you can only be invaded by, or invade, a player in the Lv125 to Lv175 bracket. Otherwise the game would be impossible to play, as you would be hounded by much more advanced players right from the outset. As it is the game has a very steep learning curve, but with enough grit and determination I can see no reason why any player would not overcome it given time.

Or putting it another way, if you play this expecting an easy ride, you're in for a very rude awakening!

this game's difficulty doesnt really come from it just being hard, though there are some pretty aggrivating parts. instead its more a challenge of your skills. a lvl 1 character has just as much chance at beating the first playthrough as a lvl 100 character, if they know how to utilize the skills the game offers you. thats w hat i like most about this game over so many other rpgs that require you to lvl up in order to defeat certain parts. its like, if lvling up is so important to fighting enemies, then why even learn any of the mechanics and strategies of the game. this is definately one of one of the more fine-tuned games out there. if you like rpgs, and challenging, yet playable games, then you definately need this game in your library

I appreciate all of your input, guys. I'm probably going to pick this up at some point. I need to catch up/stay on top of others games, first, though haha.

Bayonetta is calling my name, and Bioshock 2 will be out soon. As well the PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain, which I've been dying for, is finally out in February.

But I'll certainly pick up Demon's Souls if there's a dry spot for the PS3 at some point this year.

Shoot, I forgot there's MAG to play, too. I'm getting smothered with games, all of the sudden haha.

Thanks again.

Great Game and once you know how to deal with each enemy you will also notice the item each enemy drops and which areas are good for pumping up your soul count the game is more about knowing the enemy and what they drop then just hacking and slashing the same way against each enemy and the spells/miracles are very good and have many useful buffs and good damage, this game is like any if you have a good memory and can remember how the enemies work you will master the game eventually...

Haven't been playing very long, but it is a pretty fun game. What I'll say about the dificulty is, if not for the harsh game design (no checkpoints mid level, loss of souls, etc.) this would only be a moderately difficult game. That's not to say that the enemies and bosses arent strong, they can take your life bar down pretty fast with few attacks, but the same can be said for other games. If death didnt mean you had to restart a level/stage, it would be much easier. If being killed just sent you to a checkpoint mid level or before a boss, alot of the frustration that fuels this games infamy would be lost. It's the repitition and heavy importance of watching your step and taking your time that makes the game so hard. You have likely purchased and played Demon Souls by now, just wanted to give my two cents :)

I think it just comes down to how smart you are.

Sure, you WILL die the first time going through a level, but your learning. eventually you know enemy locations, traps, the best way to kill an enemy, what certain enemies drop, ect. and when you figure that out, that is when the game shines because you feel so rewarded when you learn how to get the upper hand.

Bosses, on the other hand, take the game to a whole new level. They are the best parts of a game and walking into a new boss chamber for the first time you are shaking with fear, but when you finally kill them, you feel like you can do anything…until the next level.
