I don't care--this was silly, yummy fun.

I'd never heard of this movie at all, but found it through searching for Richard E. Grant on Netflix; since it had him in it, and opera as a major element, I decided to give it a go. It is definitely fluffy, silly, even corny (and it's not as if the idea of surrounding an operatic sex-farce with a cinematic one is terribly original), but for an opera fan who loves Richard E. Grant, Julian Ovenden, and beautiful scenery, it was a fair bit of fun. If I had to bet, I'd put money on all the singing voices having been dubbed, which makes it kind of funny that the cast member most famous for singing, Sarah Brightman, played a character who didn't sing. (Of course, Julian Ovenden is also a trained, accomplished singer, but not in the fach in which his character sings.) Anyway, this movie is no great cinematic masterpiece, but it was pretty to look at, and mostly rather fun to watch.

Multiplex: 100+ shows a day, NONE worth watching. John Sayles' latest: NO distribution. SAD.

i like it, think it's very amusing. Only thing i found hard to swallow was the chap who seemed to be in denial about being gay, i found that a bit hard to believe in the musical/theatrical world, where gay people abound.
