What happened to Roseanna Arquettes character (SPOILER)

Was WAY too cruel. I mean it was harsh. Losing her daughter to be used as an experiment by men in white coats aready drove her to the brink of insanity, but not only that, afterwards the two brothers continue to rape, beat, humiliate, torture and eventually kill her, wtf? Her character was the most sympathetic as well, yet she easily, along with her daughter, had the worst comeuppance. The way her character was treated was really mean spirited.

Her fate was horrible. She basically was raped to death merely due to her grief. When she lost her daughter she lost everything.Whenever the scene comes with her finally being shown dead still sends shivers down my spine.

She clearly lost her mind when the daughter was taken away, from that point she was dead inside.

Only a shrink can explain what happened thereafter i suppose.
I suppose she somehow needed some kind of "joy" before they all died, but it soon turned pretty ugly.

Even though I gave the film a mixed review back in the day, there are more layers to this film than meets the eye.

I still find the escalation of hostilities and the sadism that people seemed to turn to, weird, like they all went completely insane, which IMO seem far-fetched and unlikely. Human group dynamic suggest that the rest of the group would most likely revolt and then neutralize or kill the two brothers after a while, not the other way around.

Since the actual timeline is so unclear, it's not possible to tell how long they were actually down in the bunker, when you watch the film, it seems it all went to crap in 2-3 weeks, which is a weakness of the film.

She did lose the plot completely, understandable in the circumstances. I think she initially might have started to have sex with Bobby in the hopes that she could get pregnant and 'replace' her missing daughter so to speak.

It might even be the case that she did actually get pregnant and the scene where she starts to bleed is not her period starting but her having a miscarriage.

This is actually a really interesting question. Have you read anything from a real-world scenario that would suggest this? I need to do some research but ala lord of the flies I always had the impression that small groups eventually turn violent.
