I could see a movie based on Black Bird, 20 years later. When she's about the age of the drifter Nick. She could even flashback to events of this movie like seeing her family laid out with their throats slit.
They could even make it supernatural with Nick showing up occasionally. Giving advice and acting as some twisted guardian angel.
