Does casting Steve Carell in a serious role work?

I cannot help smiling every time I see his face in a movie. Should he just stick to comedy - or get heavily disguised and get some acting lessons in?

He was VEEY good In Dan in real life, so I had seen him do dramatic work before. Love him in either category.

He's great in crazy stupid love. As much as I like him in comedy, he's wonderfully understated when he's being serious.

Some of his "comedies" have been anything but funny - Burt Wonderstone, Get Smart, Evan Almighty, et. al., so it wouldn't hurt to to pad his resume with an occasional drama. You can't build much of a reputation on comedies that flop.

I thought he was GREAT in this role.

I did too...I'd love to have him as a therapist. He seemed so kind in his responses to the couple!

reply

It does, like anyone else depending on the role, and the movie.

He was great in Little Miss Sunshine, and Crazy Stupid Love, but these were not straight dramas. The roles had a mix of the serious and the comic.

He was Oscar nomination worthy in The 40 Year Old Virgin, simply because he created a character, where with the wrong actor, would have been a one-joke role.

His role works here, because we have the star of The 40 year Old Virgin playing a sex therapist perfectly straight and realistically. It's clear he doesn't want to get typecast as a funny man film star. BTW, he's brilliant playing straight drama in Foxcatcher.🐭
