Wasn't U2 originally called 'Feedback'?

Or were they always called U2 in the film?

They were called Feedback when they first started but they changed to The Hype like in the film, finally U2.

I thought they were called the "Virgin Prunes",.. or something in those lines...

That was the other band. That was the band Gavin Friday and Dik Evans were in.

True. The Virgin Prunes, Irish post-punk band formed in 1977 (http://www.virginprunes.com/) were Gavin Friday (aka Fionan Hanvey), Dik Evans (The Edge's [aka David Evans] brother), Guggy (aka Derek Rowen, whose brother, photographer Peter Rowen, is the kid on the cover of U2's albums "Boy" and "War"). Bono (aka Paul Hewson), was nicknamed like that by his Lypton Village club friends), used to hang around with them.

You can read about it here: http://www.virginprunes.com/about/.

Guggy and Gavin have been Bono's best friends all their lives, and Bono got his inspiration for is alter egos, on his friends ("The Fly", "Mirror Ball Man", and "MacPhisto").

Actually, Gavin back vocaled some of U2's songs. He's incredibly talented. The soundtrack of the movie "In the name of the father", which is awesome, was written and performed by them. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9m1b_7H6zk)

Neil was the one who always rejected (hated) all U2 stand for, has he states in his book, and always craved their success. Bono was often generous with him. Well, he even inspired him to write the book on which this movie is based on.

This movie is a bad adaptation of the book... and of reality.
