My thoughts on the ending

I just finally finished Inuyasha (including The Final Act) after going through it for several months. Wonderful series and I absolutely love it. But I felt like the ending, great though it was, still left a bit to be desired.

I was hoping that, in the end, Inuyasha would finally become a full human as he had promised to do for Kikyo in the past. Perhaps even go to live in Kagome's world, of course having to learn to live not only as a human but as a modern human in the process (which, incidentally, has the potential to be extremely funny, as most of Inuyasha's visits to the modern world were). But the ending came just a bit short of this.

Yes, the jewel finally disappeared, Naraku was defeated, and Kagome somehow managed to continue traveling between the worlds (presumably spending most of her time in the Sengoku period and only periodically visiting the modern world), and Inuyasha and Kagome did end up together. But Inuyasha is still a half-demon, still caught between being a demon and being a human. Also, being a half-demon, he's either going to live forever or at least far longer than a human does. Which means he'll probably outlive Kagome by decades if not centuries. Kagome will grow old and die and Inuyasha will still have a long time left to live, alone. What kind of resolution is that? I was really hoping that, in the end, Inuyasha would have to choose between being a demon and being a human, and stop trying to live with one foot in each world. I hoped he would become a human.

But it seems like, despite Inuyasha being the title character of the series, it's only Kagome whose story was really satisfactorily resolved. Inuyasha is still caught between worlds in the end. Maybe he's happy being a half-demon for now, but he won't be after some decades when Kagome grows old while he's still young. He should have become a human so he could live with her properly, age with her and die with her. Instead, once Kagome is gone, Inuyasha will be back at square 1, back to where he was before he met Kikyo. Less confused, less immature, less focused on his demon side at the expense of his human side, but still alone. Miroku and Sango will eventually be gone too so he won't have his other friends anymore either.

So anyway, those are my thoughts. Love the show, like the ending, but I just feel that it falls short in a way, in that things were resolved for Kagome but not completely for Inuyasha.

You're right. I guess we get to see only the short term solution, which was great but still as you said leaves us wanting more. I also wanted to see more of Inuyasha&Kagome romance in Final act. I felt kinda sad and dissapointed how it all ended so fast but yet their love story still remained "incomplete". I wanted to see them as a couple around their friends, Shipou teasing them and making them blush you know. :D
I loved what they did with Miroku and Sango. In the end it all worked out very well and it was nice seeing them like a family.
Aarh it's a great series, one of my favorites. At times I was annoyed by Kikyou coming back over and over again, it bothered me and my heart's not as pure as Kagomes, so sometimes I really wished she'd die or something.. just to leave'em alone. Other than that, a great show. Loved it!

lol yeah the indecisiveness regarding Kikyo got a bit repetitive and tiresome sometimes, but I still generally liked her. Her final death scene actually made me cry and it takes a lot for a fictional story to get me to do that lol.

But yeah I definitely agree with you on Miroku/Sango and how I would have liked to see Inuyasha and Kagome more like that. Sota did say they got married though, so there's that.

This is definitely one of my favorite animes ever. I'm gonna check out the manga next.

Yee, I mean, not that I hated Kikyou, sometimes I really felt sorry for her, but it was just too much of her all the time, that's all. Her death didn't make me cry , but the episode with Sango and Kohaku (Ep. 163), oh damn, that made me cry waterfalls. 

Inuyasha truly is a great anime. 
