Some thoughts after watching the movie including Jackie's Accent

I watched the Mandarin version (undubbed) of Shaolin and thought the different accent intentionally done by Jackie Chan wasn't necessary. It was even annoying to some extent.

The entire movie was mostly serious and realistic except some semi-flying scenes but the ending was kinda hilarious. After the last explosion, I knew instantly where the character's body was going to land. But then again, it's not a Chinese movie without a scene like that.

What happened to Fan Bing Bing?

It was nice to see Jackie Chan with his classic moves and antics again, I thought he already gave up action stunts altogether.

Jackie is still kicking but, heck even in The karate kid 2010 his scene against the kids was an old school style thing he'd do, tying jackets together etc.

he is still to film his FINAL ACTION / STUNT / KUNG FU MOVIE!!! right now he is finishing up 1911, to come out in october, then he is going to do "Armor of God 3: Chinese Zodiac" which he means to be the send-off to Martial arts and super stunts, prior to going all drama.

PS have you seen some of his more recent movies like 2004's New Police Story, 2005's The Myth, 2006's Rob-B-Hood? 2009's Shinjuku Incident, 2010's Little Big Soldier? New Police, Myth, Rob, and Little Big Soldier show jackie at his martial arts antics, and little big soldier was meant to be low on action more on plot (and it worked very well, love that movie) and the action scenes are extremely fun and oldschool jackie chan style in the manner of which he does them (imagine the reaching for bottles in Rumble in the bronx scene but instead with a sword), and then 2009's Shinjuku is an EXCELLENT DRAMA. No Kung fu but amazing movie.

I think the accent is just for some comedy. Just look at Let the Bullets fly.

The accent is actually how a lot of people in Honan Province (where the Shaolin Temple is located) inflect their words.

But nobody else talks like that in the movie even though at least some of them must be locals... so why bother to have one character talk like that. Out of place and unnecessary.

Well, the character also happens to be older than everyone except the top monk.

The accent comes from the Sandong Province AFAIK.

I thought it was just to give him a more rough feel to help epitomize that type of simple zen, but perhaps i' m just a romantic.

Sandong province which is where his character is supposed to be from.
